I think my new D70 has dust on the low pass filter. It is showing up as a black speck on my photos. Anyone around the Chicago area know of a camera store/repair that you would recommend for cleaning this? I'm afraid to take it to Ritz. They did say my one year warranty would cover the cleaning but that I'll be without the camera 6-8 weeks!!! When I mentioned low pass filter to the person on the phone, I think he knew less about cameras than I do... |

Have you tried to clean it your self? I've been able to keep mine clean with just a bulb blower. Not the blower brush. Just a blower.

Hi-ho,
If it's a big visible lump, you should be able to use a blower and clean it yourself, it's only for 'stuck' bits you should have to resort to physical cleaning..
I imagine there will be be someone from Chicago on the site who can hold your hand if this is your first 'blower in the camera' experience.
What F stop does it show up at? Is it showing at F/16, or wide open?
Cheers, Me.

Sorry, I had to go to my dance class ...
Okay, I noticed the black speck yesterday shooting a f/22 but I think I also noticed around f/16 today. Everything I read seems to suggest the "bulb blower," but I think I'm scared to do this the first time. Do I follow the instructions in the book for cleaning the low-pass filter, which is full of warnings, or do I just take off the lens, hold the camera with the opening down and blow up (boy, this sounds very, very weird, my face may even be red). But back to the problem. Is that what I do? |

And kirbic, I'm actually in Bourbonnais (Kankakee), but get to Chicago when ever I can. If we have a GTG in Chicago, maybe then??? |

You also may want to check out the Copper Hill method. The supplies are relatively inexpensive and the method itself is easy. This is how I clean, and I've had great success with it.

Yes, I've done that to my Rebel and so far it's been sufficient to clean it. I have one of those big "Hurricane" blower bulbs.
Key is to hold it upside down, and do it in a pretty clean environment.

I second kirbic's copper hill method //www.pbase.com/copperhill/ccd_cleaning. Works every time for me.

Thanks everyone. Time permitting, I'm going to get the supplies needed, remain calm, give it a go. I may start with the bulb blower first. I may need a good bloody mary after! |
