First off, congrats to the ribbon winners! I predicted the blue (with my scoring) and I am so glad Bear ribboned, it has been a long time coming for sure!

Also, thanks so much for the comments on my entry! I finished 66th, which is, I'll be honest, quite a bit lower than I expected (I do realize finishing in the 87th percentile in this group is nothing to sneeze at, and hey, it just means there is more to learn, and that's why I am here).

I found it interesting that about half the people who commented on the spoon thought it was dirty, and the other half liked it.

First off, it was NOT dirty :) It was RUSTIC. Come on people. ;-)

I thought my entry was about as minimalist as it could get, and people generally liked the composition. What would have made it better? Was it really the spoon? Was the subject just not that interesting (which is what I suspect)? Are there other technical issues?

Thanks, and thanks again to all those who commented.

I would've liked to see it without the spoon.

It doesn't feel right on the bottom left. Probably would've went with a "6", but maybe an "8" if it was centered.

This is minimalism in the artistic sense. Good work.

There's a general sense, in that challenge, that a lot of people just took a subject and placed it willy-nilly in a corner, leaving an empty void around it to satisfy the challenge terms. I believe there was a general reaction against that device in this challenge, in favor of more integrated subject/ground relationships. Surely, in the pure sense of minimalism, this shot qualifies, but it leaves me wanting to feel a reason (beyond the challenge terms) as to why it's framed as it is.

If, for example, there had been just the edge of the arc of a plate somewhere on the upper right edge of the image, that might have sufficed to extend the dynamic range of the image.

Of the top 10, only 2 were this sort of image, and Tiberius's "Lonely Fisherman" isn't quite that stark, because there's an implied "horizon-in-the-mist" feel to it, which is enhanced by the hint of ripples in front of the boat. Mocabela's "isolated beauty" is more similar to your image, conceptually, but the extreme contrast between figure and ground generates a dynamic that invades the negative space, and the carefully-done white inline is very effective here.

Both 16th and 20th places were also small subjects on white grounds, but in each case the color is so vibrant that the composition becomes more approachable, in a sense. So, it might be fair to say that the "minimalism" (in the pure sense) of your image (its lack of color and contrast) is working against you in this challenge.

I liked the shot, regardless.

Robt.

It was the spoon, I gave you an 8, would have been higher if the spoon didn't compete for attention with the single cheerio. :)
