Anyone else seeing comments like this one ?
"Although it's a nice exposure, its a boring picture. Severe lack of imagination and freshness."

05/04/2005 11:03:41 PM · #53
Actually, I'm getting comments like "I really like this...unusal...nice lighting, etc." but still hovering below 5.0000

Oh well, still having fun and love my shot no matter.

Hey RonBeam, I did not dismiss your comment, in fact took it serious. Several of the last challenges have been more of a legal challenge than a photography challeng. Everyone is second guessing the photographer as to how and why. Many are without a doubt not within the challenge, other are out of the box thinking. I would hope that a great pic outside the box but within an artistic view is not down graded. Afterall this is for fun, I haven't seen any cash prizes or free cameras, just bragging rights. If a picture is basic editing, the surroundings are black or dark naturally and lights are on and the scene is outdoors, and it is obviously a long timeer due to blurred people, does it matter if it's 8pm or 11:30 pm. The spirit and law of the challenge was met. I really enjoyed your comment and did not dismiss it, just chuckled a little. Keep the comments coming, some are great and some are a great laugh.

Hi ya'll,
Love some of the comments on late night. Even the one that says "looks more like dinner time to me". WOW in some places, especially tourist areas people eat way into the early morning. I guess 10:07 pm was not late enough. snip I'll try realy hard if we get a chance again to take the pic at 1159 pm.;)
If we get a challenge of "Early Morning" I'll be certain to get that picture taken at 0001 am because 6 or 6 am is too late I'm sure.
Just having fun, no offense to anyone, love the comments!

That was my comment, Sir. I understand that people can dine at all hours. Though I usually eat supper prior to 9 PM, I have dined out into the wee hours, as probably everyone has at some time. For that matter, people can go bicycling at all hours. But would a shot of people on bikes (even in the dark) suggest Late Night to the majority of viewers? I actually rated your shot well, but was trying to inform you that a nearly filled dining area will not, to the majority of people, suggest a late night activity.

I am sure you took my comment constructively, as your email to me indicated; but not every comment should be overlooked just because it is not applause.

LOL! I spent a couple hours taking pictures of one thing, trying to get the light correct, right off the camera. Lights can be such a puzzler at times.
05/05/2005 08:50:39 AM · #58
I've come to grips, and seen the light.

RE: the comments which annoyed me so much: I made the same comments to myself before submitting, but then thought it was ridiculous not to submit just because my photo appears to be poor quality. After all, I went out late at night to get that photo, and I'm into submitting stuff for the fun of it. I must be bipolar. :-D

-edit: I guess I'll have to remove Barry from the enemies column of my big chart. ;-)

I didn't see that in the challenge description, but a commenter made it known that it was missing.
The other 10 commenters & 2 favs so far didn't mention it.

Ya know, it seems as thought people are hitting the challenges head-on but in actively trying to do so are at the same time taking some, boring as toast, photo's. Some stuff is amazing but percentage wise....I don't know.

I should add that my entry is a stinker. Only a team of psychologists could explain why I entered it. Vienna's best would be stumped by some of my logic, on what and why I enter certain things but having said that...

Did anybody read into the word "Late" in this challenge? Not just "night" but...Late Night. To me there's a vibe to Late Night, that can't be captured at 8:00, 9:00, 10:00 and that is what I'm looking for in these images, at least for super high scores.

There are many nice night shots but not much that jumps out at me and whispers...late night.

I've made some comments along those lines...
sometimes I see a photo that is competent, but doesn't really inspire me. You don't have to have a 'wow' factor. You don't even have to create a 'good' photo. You can do what you want. Just my opinion and taste though, and I'm glad it's doing well for you.

How can you see your individual scores? I see people posting I'm getting mostly 3's and 4's.... it is a mathmatical system?

Anyone else annoyed by the solid black pictures entered for this challenge?

Re: All Black Images... Yes, I was. But I wasn't shocked that there were a few.

Some people try to figure out what votes they are getting by updating frequently and doing the math. But it's really only an approximation, a qualified guess.

The real question is: which one of them stands out sufficiently to get the brown ribbon? :)

Annoyed? Yes. That just wastes the voters' time. Hard enough as it is to vote on the larger challenges without that. I just hope they are still there at the end so we can see who put them in.

What's the brown ribbon tiebreaker? I mean if they all end up at the bottom with a score of 1 then...? # of comments wins? ;^)

Is the missing word deliberate? Can we fill in the blank?

Not really...I just figured it was someone being "silly", having a bit of fun or going for the lowest. I was expecting to see at least one of these , but two? A treat indeed! {{{giggles}}} I'm more annoyed by bad drivers, cell phones and stuff like that. : }

Greetings,
OK, I too want to join in the fray about really anal people and the use of flash, or any artificial light I recieved the foloowing comment, of course from a bagged head;
"It doesn't show your night shooting capabilities if you have to put a big light on it :("
1) It's not a big light by any means in the world of photography, its an on camera mounted flash, at either 1/16 or 1/32 power.
2) Not all of us live in the ciites with street lights, neon and other forms of "naturally" occuring light.
3) While this challenge ran, for a large part of the world, the moon was in its waning phases, and not a very good source of light either.
So In taking into consideration #2, and #3, unless peeps want to look at 300+ black screen images, I'd say the use of some source of alternate light is pretty much a must in this challenge, to mark people down for the use of same, is assinine at the least.

Mike - You forgot to mention the lack of long shutter speed capability of many mid to low end cameras.

I kind of agree with the commenter on a number of pics: a subject lit by flash at night qualifies under the challenge rules, but is not likely to score highly in my book. A photo of a tree line lit by starlight could be fantastic. A photo of a fisherman operating by low watt candle in the night could be quite amazing. I am sure that there are plenty of countryside night-time images that would be enhanced by good low light photography, rather than require flash exposure.

good cityscape night time photos often still require long exposures, though admittedly there may be more options in the city than the countryside if you want to take a fast shutter speed photo.

With some of the photos in this challenge, I feel as if I'm looking at postcards. Very well done ones at that.

Actually, it doesn't sound like you agree very much at all..."...a subject lit by flash at night qualifies under the challenge rules, but is not likely to score highly in my book.".
