Anyone with some last minute photo-related tips as I leave for Europe in a few hours. We're visiting with some relatives in Germany (Odenwald/Heidelburg area) for a few days then going to Northern Italy for a week (Brixen area).

I've bought that crazy-expensive circular polarizer for all the landscapes I want to shoot and I'm bringing my tripod...anything else I should think of (other than pray for blue skies...it's supposed to rain rain rain)?

Thanks!

while the photos are important, make sure you HAVE FUN!

everything looks cool in a different language -- signs, etc. landscapes are great, but take lots of candids and lifestyle shots. those to me are the best.

and i found pictures on the train to be kind of fun while i was there in november. :)

have a great trip. travel safe!

Backup batteries, current converter for your recharger, extra memory, extra lens caps, UV filters for lens protection, sensor cleaning supplies, lens cleaning supplies, a soft brush and a rubber air spritzer for cleaning dust or dirt if you get exposed, foam padding to stuff your camera bag tightly for in-transit travel, a list of all your credit cards & emergency numbers for same kept separately from your wallet, ditto the traveler's checks, YOUR PASSPORT, have fun!

Sounds wonderful. Have a great trip!
I can't think of any photo-related tips, sorry. Maybe the standard...don't wear new shoes for lengthy walks. Always gets me in trouble.

If you're in Northern Italy, hop a train to Venice. Well worth it. Drink plenty of beer in Germany. Drink plenty of wine in Italy and enjoy.

What they said, and don't forget to check out the duty-free shops on your return flight. Which reminds me pack light going, leave the blue jeans as a gift and load up on cool souvenirs to bring home.

(And whatever you do, don't point your camera at people in uniforms holding guns.)

Dont always shoot the big stuff, remember to enjoy what you see with your real eyes as well as the big camera one, shoot lots - you can always delete them afterwards, dont always strive for perfection, capturing a moment in time doesnt always have to be technically great, have fun.

some thing need to be enjoyed out from behind the camera ... put the camera away once in a while and soak it in (then quickly go grab the camera again)

:)

Apparently, this is my role, to play straight so you can be witty....
(Doesn't the US still have military there?)

Bring a wide angle lens (most important), a fast lens for indoor stuff, and definitely visit Venice.

Yes, there are a few troops left in Germany, mainly to support other operations outside of the country, but their actions outside their bases are subject to German law and jurisdictions, which should afford a photographing traveller reasonable liberty.
