Aside from fixing the search, I think it would be helpful to reduce the number of repeat posts if there was a checkbox that said "Check for similar posts" when you enter a new topic and when you check the box and submit your post, it automatically does an intelligent search for similar posts and lists them with the first few lines. You would then have the option of just clicking into an existing thread or click a button that says "Go Ahead and Post" or something like that.
This is something like an optional forced search (oxymoron, I know, but that's how I'd describe it). It is used in many help desk systems when you submit a trouble ticket, it searched through the knowledgebase and presents you with a list of possible solutions and you must then confirm that you still want to submit the ticket. Seems like it would work well in forum posting especially if it was an optional checkbox.

right now i think the focus is on getting the search capability back online.
a "forced" search might overwhelm the system too much.
in the meantime, feel free to direct people to other threads. we'll try to keep locking those that are complete duplicates.

Thanks Rob. I had no specific post or thread complaint in mind - just interested to see how well that concept would work in a forum setting. Probably right about this particular one and the performance hit though.
