You seem to have lost quite a bit of shadow detail, can barely make out the legs, and the whole thing seems a little oversharpened - apart from that, great capture and cool bird :)

I share your interest in taking pics of birds, but unless you have a real long lens I wouldn't recommend disturbing them on the nest. Some may disagree, just my opinion, but I want to mention it to you.

As for the shots, I like the first one the most. Not sure, but I think it is a white ibis (or if not someone please correct me)? I think that shot would be better if the face of the bird were more visible. The second shot seems to get lost in the background of sticks and nesting material. I would try to isolate one of these birds on a perch away from the background by using the AV mode on your Rebel to set a larger aperture (a smaller f-number). Ideally, I would try to capture the striking blue bill of that bird as the focal point.

Keep on clicking, I enjoy seeing those bird shots!

There is a place I go fishing sometimes called Lake Martin. To get there you have to drive down a gravel road to the lake. There is a bird sanctuary swamp / cypress trees where the photos were taken. , it is also a haven for photographers. There must have been 50 plus people taking photos this morning, I felt inadequate with my 75 – 300mm lens. There was state of the art equipment out there.

I talked with a guy from Italy this morning. He had a 70-200L lens, which I was thinking about getting to replace my 300mm. Although the L lens is sharper, the 200 is just not enough reach, he convinced me to keep my 300mm.
