I have found that image quality wasn't that big of a step up though (which I was expecting).

But the HUGE step was performance. The AF system is phoenominal! The crop factor is fantastic!

I went from the 10D to the 1Ds and for me the tonal range may not be too different but the performance of the lenses on the body, the AF system, the spot metering and the field of view the FF sensor give have been nice features to get used to. I did find a step from 6mp up to 11mp to be noticeable (don't know how the 8mp 1DII compares). For iamges that I frame with the 10D and then recompose and shoot with the 1Ds the images just have more data in them given the same composition. Of course, this doesn't speak to the functionality of the sports/birding/fast-action features of the 1DII or even the 20D.

The 1Ds was worth the investment to me over the 10D and the DigicII processor in the Mark II's seems like it would only enhance the tonal range of the bodies (although I have read that the anti-aliasing filters on the Mark II's cause them to lose some sharpness out of the camera as compared with the original versions of two 1-series bodies).
