What's the obsession with missing a challenge? I made enough comments to qualify a year ago but I will probably not even participate in that challenge. Big Deal, Jeez.

i learn alot from commenting as it really makes me look at all the aspects of the picture what i like and dont and how to shoot better.

Amy,
If you are not comfortable with receiving PM's during voting, there is an option available to members only to keep your comments anonymous until voting is over. You can enable this option by going to My Home/My Preferences and selecting the appropriate checkbox (be sure to save your changes once you have done so).
Otherwise, expect that you may occasionally receive replies to your comments via PM. If any of those replies are abusive or otherwise violate the site Terms of Service, please contact any member of Site Council. Be sure to save the PM as we may ask you to forward it to us.
Thanks,
Terry

I think a "quality comment" should include some positive reinforcement as well as the "you should haves" especially if you do the "You should have" thing. Sometimes it is hard and some times there doesn't seem to be enough time.

Barry | I guess the only way that anyone will learn is to try it.. I am sure that if you try telling a photographer that has been here since this site has been here or any of the site councils that their shot has a problem needing fixed, or theres something in it you dont like but rather see.... they wont care or mind and you wont have anyone hate you... If you like you can practice on mine:) It took me awhile.. I too thought I wasnt qualified enough nor did I know anything,,, Once I took it on as art though because art I know, I couldnt go wrong... then I could come up with smaller but better wording in comments.. Folks you dont have to be a genious to have a opinion... But you do have to have common sense and a wee little heart not to crush anyones feelings... Be supportive and you will get support back..
I like to comment on others that have commented on mine ... I also have tried to comment on pictures that have been taking by members with the same camera that I have.. this helps me to better understand my camera..
I dont know still half of what is right and wrong in the "craft" or technical issues of photography, but I know what I see if I like it or not...
These are only my opinions here..:)
Surely if our kids have opinions that we can state them... try asking a child, they will give you the best honest opinion you could ever get...

One more question:
How do you know if you even qualified for the (commenters) extra challenge? |

If you click on the challenge, it will either allow you to enter or tell you that you aren't eligible and how many more comments you need to make. |

I don't understand this pc line of thought. If I have constructive critism of someones image, but it is all negative, should I not give this criticism because the photographer might cry? I think not. I'm not saying be abusive, I'm saying, 'If you do _____________ and _____________ your shot will be much more effective' is a much better comment than no comment at all. I refuse to hide my constructive critism in cotton candy. If you don't like it, don't submit entries. Once again, I wanna reinforce that I don't believe in being abusive, but sometimes tough love is the best love...

Following this logic expounds on my previous post. Kids do not hide their thoughts behind cotton candy. If they don't like something they tell it straight up. They don't say, "Brocolli is a very nice green color but tastes yucky". They say, "I don't like brocolli". We as adults accept that from kids, why can't we as adults accept that from other adults?

Oh, you folks. Do you realize how hard I had to work to keep my relative lead? You have no idea. Congratulations to all and make it a habit to comment. |

I forgot to mention that you need to run that through the DPC Translator (Pat. Pending) as you write it ....
"I'm sorry, but I just don't see how your photo relates to this challenge, and therefore must reluctantly give you a low vote." |

DPC Translator - Definitely Politically Correct?
"What were you thinking?" is not the proper translation, so i s'pose I need the patented one then, huh?

I believe the ability to apply alternate idioms is available to paid members, but I can't remember where you set those preferences. |

I have seen others use the Auto Helpful Comment - it marks the first 2 as helpful but not the last, but i cannot seem to make it work. Perhaps it is a bug in Firefox (I have the insurrectionist version, very rare. Lots of incompatibilites with the PC crowd (maybe i need a mac?))

Yes, it's a members challenge. You can tell which ones are members and which are 'everyone' challenges by the icon next to them on the main page. Grey are for everyone, Blue are members only.
Don't fret...there's still time to become a member! |

Yes. A blue user icon next to any challenge indicates it is a member-only challenge. A grey user icon indicates it is open to all registered users.
