So were our entries supposed to contain either the symbol for "pi" or the number "3.14159...." in them? I ask because of some comments I got, and some comments on some of the other entries.

I just assumed that anything kinda relating to circles, particularly when presented in a scientific/mathematic way, would be well received.

I thought the same. 9 out of 10 in the top 10 actually had the symbol for pi or the number, not much interpretation at all. I guess the voters took this extremely literally. A very narrow challenge indeed.

I predicted that this would happen, and though the top pictures were great, it would have been nice to have seen some of the other very fine images do well that showed pi at work rather than just the symbol of pi.

I've kinda learned that if your overall goal is to win a DPC challenge, you are safest in communicating the most literal and strict interpretation of the challenge. If you were a photographer for a magazine, consider your editor quite uncreative. Come to think of it: it may be that most magazine editors ARE uncreative. Hmmmm......
