The Geograph project aims to take a representative digital photo of every square kilometre of the British Isles!
www.geograph.co.uk

A geograph image presents information on the main human and physical geographical feature(s) present in any Ordnance Survey (Nat. mapping organisation of UK) 1km grid square.

If you're the first to submit a proper "geograph" (for example in SP6302), you'll get a geograph point added to your profile and the 'warm glow' that comes with it. So what makes an image a genuine geograph?

* The image must be taken within the 1km grid square
* You must clearly show at close range one of the main geographical features within the square
* You should include a short description relating the image to the map square

Good quality, visually appealing and historically relevant pictures (eg wide area views covering many square kilometers) may also be accepted as supplemental images, provided they are accurately located, but may not qualify as geographs.

If you like, you can provide more images or extra information (which can be edited at any time) but to activate a square you need to be first to meet the criteria above!

guide to good geographing can be found at:
//www.geograph.co.uk/help/guide

The navigation around the mapping window is not obvious at first, using the OS 'get-a-map' website will help. View in to the largest scale and you can see the geograph images that represent each 1km grid square.

The aim is to build a true community project that won't leave a nasty taste in the mouth by getting sold for shedloads of cash and taken away from the people who contributed. Our licence terms ensure that the site and content can never be "taken away".

Where mapping and Photography collides (right up my 'street' for an old cartographer!).
