Here is one of my first shots this spring of a male Rubythroat. I have kept track of these amazing creatures and have been able to predict their arrival in my backyard to almost the day each spring. Its incredible to think that these tiny birds fly over the Gulf of Mexico (over 500 miles) within a 24 hour period without food in their migration from South America to the East Coast of the United States each year. I took this with my EF 75-300 from about 6 feet away.

Very well shot. Hummingbirds are just a bueatiful bird. There colors and movement are just incredible. I've never shot birds so I dont know what it takes to get a photography but I must say well done especially with the 75-300 its not a very sharp lens but you made it look sharp.

I'm in Maryland, so your hummers should show up at any time. My first siteing was the 23rd of april. The males precede the females.

Can you suggest a better zoom lens? |

I wish I had a better (bigger) one to show now but this link will have to do.
Shot this one down in Arizona I think last year. I had my tripod and camera set up right by the feeder intending to use my remote, took one piture then while at the camera making some adjustments he came back and let me stay there shooting him (her?). This one is cropped.

These are all with my Point & Shoot, and I can't wait to use my Rebel with the EF 70-200mm f/4 L glass. I have feeders out, planted a hummingbird garden, and basically put bright colors in the yard to attract the hummers.

Only problem in getting better zoom and sharper images you end up forking more money for them. I'd use the a lens that has a large aperture like the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 or Canon 70-200 f/2.8 or even a 150mm marco lens I have noticed that a macro lens can do wonders with distant images. Due to its magnification factor you get a closer picture and a sharper image as its f/2.8 is quite large.

Do you mean a longer one? How much do you want to invest?
These come to mind:
Tamron Zoom Telephoto SP AF 200-500mm f/5-6.3 Di LD IF Autofocus $879
Sigma Zoom Normal-Telephoto 50-500mm f/4.0-6.3 EX APO RF HSM $999
Sigma Zoom Telephoto 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 EX APO OS $999
Canon Zoom Telephoto EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM $1410
And if you don't want more reach but need superb quality, and can afford it -
Sigma Zoom Telephoto 120-300mm f/2.8 EX APO IF HSM $2400
Prices are from B&H before any rebates.
These are a few that I personally know to be very good lenses. There are many more available that have longer reach and/or lower prices.
