Greetings binary gurus,

After a recent complete PC reload from scratch, I've noticed an odd bug with PS that I wonder if any one has ever run across before.

Windows 2000 Pro with all updates, PS 7.01, open a folder with jpegs, select one, right click and choose Open With, select Irfanview (my default image viewer) and it opens fine. If I select Open With, choose Photoshop, it will open PS, but image is not displayed. I can leave PS open, go back to that folder, choose Open With again, it takes me to PS, but again, no image displayed. Almost as if the Open With command was Open only, yet works OK in other programs.
Only way to open an image in PS is to use the File, Open in PS itself.

I uninstalled PS and reinstalled, same thing. Did the 7.01 and scripting updates too with no change.

All the same software I had before, just an odd behavior problem now. Complete reload from scratch was on a drive that all zeros were written to to completely scrub it.

Any ideas??

what operating system are you using ?

You need to add the %1 flag variable to the shortcut for example (Quotes required as well):

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\PhotoEd\PHOTOED.EXE" "%1"

Andy

ED: Whoops silly me it should read %1 variable (not flag)

To be a little more helpful for those who may not have seen this...

To change the (any) SendTo Shortcut...

Right Click Start button, choose Explore
Document and Settings > your computer logon > SendTo
Right Click the PS shortcut, choose Properties
at the very end of the entry in Target: field enter a space then "%1"

The %1 varible is what passes the current filename on to which ever application you are using. With out it the App doesn't know what you want to open.

Brad,
I think the problem is with your camera, and you should send it to me for further "investigation".

Thanks for the quick responses.
I seem to remember the windows annoyances issue a long time ago and had installed a program to help with the right-click functionality issues a year or so ago for another issue.

Andy,
I looked in my: C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\ folder, but saw no PhotoEd\PHOTOED.EXE listed.

On a side note, I just downloaded the 30-day PS CS2 trial and now right-click function is as expected - Open With - PS CS2 - program launches and image is on the screen. Previous to this, PS7 would launch fine, just no image was opened.

Maybe I should have called Orkin to see if they could help.
Such small quirks, yet bug me.

Sorry that was an example...you are looking for the PS or Photoshop Short cut. Should refer to Photoshop in some way and have a little arrow in the bottom left (meaning short cut).

Andy

Gotcha'

Now is the Right-Click, Open With considered the same as a shortcut though? Seems the Right-Click, Open With command line syntax is different than the Double-Click command lines.

I have Tweak UI installed to get rid of the annoying little arrows (never did like them) by the way.
:)

I'm glad I found this, I've been having a similar problem with my PSP. Thanks all

Brad, I use irfanview in conjunction with PS6. When viewing files, I use irfanview. It's set up as my default viewer. I've set up Irfanview so that when I hit shift-e it sends the file to PS for editing. I like this set up because (especially with .crw files) irfanview displays them quicker than loading into PS...

Gotcha...
For Open with...
you have to Open Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types
Scroll down to (gets fussy here for jpegs) One of the three controls all of them... JPE JPEG and JPG... I think JPE is the one we want to fix...
Click on JPEJPEG > Advanced button
Click on Open to select it
Click on the Edit button...

Add the "%1" to the end of the Application used to perform action:

Remember that Open with is when you double click a jpg or what ever...I personally have jpgs open in my viewer.

I add an Edit action to this same area that adds Edit to the Right click menu when clicking on files to launch my photo editor.

As I was it is...JPEG that controls jpg file types Click the Advanced but on that one... Edit Open or Add the Edit action there to be able to right click edit (using your editor as opposed to that Paint or whatever it uses by default).
