Manic or Konador had a thread about some sort of merit system. The search is not working and I can't find it. If anyone has it in their watched threads or knows where it is please oint us to that thread.

Maybe the same thing you are refferring to Rex, but yes, I remember a while back, a thread talking about a point or merit system, based on comments/critiques, where you earn points when giving them, you also I think got so many points per year and when signing up, but then you could cash in those points to get critiques. I don't remember the exact details, but it sounded interesting, maybe worth discussion/consideration.

I think this is an excellent solution. Many of the CC critiques I've read thru haven't been all that well written, and many seem to be from people who aren't that well versed as photographers.
I don't say this to be mean or to attack anyone. On the contrary, those who are willing to take the time to write critiques should be commended for their public-spiritedness (is there such a word?). I'm only trying to point out that a request for a critique is likely made in hopes of hearing from an "expert", rather than from a peer. Personally, I haven't looked into becoming part of the CC because I don't feel qualified.
Limiting the requests to a manageable number would make for a much more valuable response, since it wouldn't (shouldn't) be written in haste, and hopefully would be coming from someone with some wisdom to impart, beyond "Great job. Keep it up."
Just my 2cts.

I just picked up my CC work a few weeks ago.
It̢۪s going slowly but it is rewarding work, 99% of the comments I've made for the CC (and it's not all/only positive) are welcomed by the members.
I got a lot of thank you notes of ppl saying that my comment really helped them to see what was wrong, or right, why it scored how it scored and so on...
And it helped me also to see my own flaws, so I say get on the CC and become better
And not only that, by being a CC member you will:
-loose those extra pounds.
-get whiter teeth.
-look better in a swimsuit.
-get more friends.
-have 200% bigger change of winning the lottery.
These are proven facts.
So I am back in the club and go off now to comment on another one.

While I don't necessarily agree with everything you've said (ie: needing a review from an "expert"), I certainly think I have a similar underlying belief. I have noticed Critique Club shots in the past (so long ago, I can't remember who left them or where I saw them) that pretty much come down to that - "I can't see many ways to improve this - great job!". While this may be fine for the casual commenter, I think CC members (myself included) need to take the initiative to find SOMETHING that they would have changed. Perhaps if the shot is a ribboner, or is one of their most absolute favorite shots they've ever seen, this won't apply. But there have often been ribboning shots that I would definitely have shot differently.. and all other things being equal, that may have been the difference between the ribbon and getting 25th.. but it's certainly a valid and necessary step to take when you're giving opinions to others as a member of the CC.
However, I think it is great when anyone is willing to give an honest try. I must admit that not all shots can necessarily be improved upon from the eyes of one person. If I were given one of my most favorite shots to critique, I'm sure that there is little to nothing that I could come up with. After all, it is my favorite for a reason.

Mine are getting marked helpful...maybe it's the time of year or something. I always send a pm though letting them know of the comment and say "I hope you found this helpful in some way". And then, the look at it and say, wow, I did find this helpful...then they email back and forget to click the damn useful button. Click button...THEN email. Click button...THEN email. Well, I think only about 6 of the recent 50 I've given were not marked, but they will be. Where did I put his address again? I know your family. Click the button. Click. CLick. Click. |
