Buying a home is a great thing to do, paying down a mortgage is so much better than paying rent to live somewhere. It's like taking money out of your front pocket and putting it into your back pocket. For example, my wife & I got really lucky and bought in a great neighborhood at a low price. The value of our house has risen over 60% over the last ten years. So compared to renting somewhere, it's as if we've been paid to live there. Pretty nice.

Make sure you take the before and after pics... like I did here when I torn my fireplace apart and put the new one in...
Edit: these are straight out of camera, took as jpegs, only cropped a bit.

Thanks all! There's not much fixing-up to be done...I really like it as is. Although I'm considering doing a small wall in the living room all small, shiny black tiles...some stuff like that to kick it up. The living room/dining room area is bright red (which I love love love)..I plan to accent it with red/gold provincial wallpaper - or so that's what I am feeling today. Who knows about tomorrow!
The BBQ is June 1st - move in day :-) Lots of beer, too. |

Only one word of caution about wallpaper, its a pain in the butt to take off if you get tired of it. I just did that at my mom's place and it took an entire weekend to take it out of one room. IMO paint is the way to go...lol.
June 1st it is...yay new house party!!! |

Actually no (unless it's really old). There's a wonderful product out there that just dissolves the glue and the paper comes off very easily.

| Yeah the paper was very old. I did use some of that stuff to help disolve the glue but it didn't help much. After I had almost all of it down I tried "simple green" and it worked fairly well. Live and learn...lol. |

| No worries, i'm usually NOT a fan of wallpaper, but for this one wall I think it's the way to go...I also hate faux finishes so that doesn't leave me with many options. Again, it'd just be one medium sized wall..using the new glue that melts like butter :-) |

| One wall won't be bad even if it is hard to take down. I don't know what kind of glue they used on the old stuff but boy did it stick...lol. I am sure the newer glues are fine. |

They used paste. Dries up to a rock-hard consistency, essentially becomes a part of the plaster.
Robt.
And oh, yes, congrats berry! I just became a home-owner for the first time when I was 56, what a difference it makes!

Take a look at sponge painting. If you find someone good, it's actually prettier than wallpaper, and is much easier to deal with if you change you mind in the future--you just paint over it! |
