Here's a fresh idea (until someone tells me it's already been suggested...) If I think about the real community of DPC, I know there's a notable group of people who keep the torch burning.

Some comment like an art critic to help the new member, others post thought provoking excercises, some just portray a great example of being a role model. No matter what the specifics, I'm sure everyone who has been on DPC for a while has a few people to thank for their photographic growth and pleasurable experience here.

How about a new class of ribbon, or some other pixelware prize that is based on nominations on some interval. The site council, or some new council, whatever, would select from the nominations on some interval and their profile / forum icon would include an icon.

The people I have in mind would probably tell you that they wouldn't want that recognition, but I think it would make a lot of people feel good about the time they put in to a community they believe in, and it would require very little effort from a programming perspective.

Any thoughts?

Edit: That interval ought to be wide enough so as to keep numbers low. Maybe quarterly, or bianually.

I think that is a good idea. I have went from a 4.6 to a 4.8 to a 5.3 and probrably a 5.1 from tips from people here.

I would just change the icon of the award or "kudos" to something other than a ribbon. Maybe a star or a hand for like a helping hand.

Whoops this is dustdevil on singsunshines account. I have both of them up. She is getting ready for work.

There's been a lot of talk of cliques recently, and I think this has the potential to turn into a popularity contest rather than rewarding those that really contribute the most.

I thought about that possibility... But the dark side of force was never stronger than the light side, just easier to give in to.

I don't honestly think DPC *is* any more cliqueish than any other community. In general, I see any well constructed thoughts responded to in like. Sure, at busy times some threads slip through the cracks, but that's a reality of the population size. There are people who are better known, and well liked, etc. But I've never felt ostricized by any one here, and I don't *think* I'm in any cliques...

Back to topic though, I guess I'd prefer to experiment with a Community Kudos award because of the good it could channel rather than discount it for the potential of abuse. As DPC grows, it will be critical to maintain the community, and I'd love to be able to nominate some of the folks I've seen helping...
