After reading much of the DPC getting clique-y? thread I had an idea. I don't know if it's been mentioned before (darn search!) but I think it would really help people who struggle to get comments.

Either as a new site feature or an individual group thing (I'm not really sure how to implement this) we coulp all join a small group of photographers dedicated to commenting on each others work. Maybe around 8-12 per group, and we could rotate to new groups after a while to get a variety of opinions.

I certainly don't have the skill or time to organize something like this, but I could join one and give honest opinions to those who want them.

Anybody care to take this on? I'll probably bump this post in the morning if it doesn't take off, sisnce it is almost 4:00 am server time.

I like the idea.
Just to get an idea of what your aiming at, would it be like:
"I'm part or Group Pi: I weekly/daily check on other group member's portfolio's to see if they have any work that I can critique/comment on."
I'd like to do it.

Yeah that would be one way of doing it. Maybe each person in the group could set up a folder in their portfolio specificly for the group. If there is nothing there, then comenting on the general portfolio would work as well.

Hang on, let me get this right... a thread was posted complaining about DPC getting cliquey. So the proposed answer is to create cliques?
I think this is not a great idea for loads of reasons.
Here are a few:
The main reason why many photos don't get comments when posted in forums is because they are often not particularly inspired and there is often just not much that can be said about them. If one of the more experienced photographers posts some photos, it is usually easier to comment on those pictures than on 'snapshots'.
Small cliques are going to find it even harder to gather constructive comments on photos without much impact.
If you've posted a photo that nobody has commented on, ask yourself how you could have taken the photo with more impact... perhaps more imaginative use of colour or composition, maybe the idea is boring and has been done to death... what could have made your photo stand out?

I see contradiction here too Bobster.

Will those who think we are getting clique-y stand over there, and those who favor starting small groups stand over there. That's it, now move a little closer together, ok, please hold still for a moment, smile, great!!! ok, hold for one more now -- thanks everybody. Now when is that juxtaposition challenge?

It's posts like this that make it worth my time to read about Internet cliques instead of getting work done... Thanks man!
