I had a theory that those who cast votes higher receive higher vote scores themselves. So I took a random sample on DPC (about 60 users).

And there is some correlation. Interesting. Of course there are other factors (which I'm trying to learn)

I don't think that making yourself vote higher will get you bigger scores yourself. Maybe whatever makes people see more qualities in other people's photos makes them take better photos.

Ok, back to non-nerdy stuff now.....

That is rather interesting, BTW. Maybe getting higher scores makes people happy, and happy people tend to vote higher? ;-)

Can't touch your image. But I looked up myself:
Votes Cast: 3370
Avg Vote Cast: 5.3947
Votes Received: 1992
Avg Vote Received: 4.6330

Conclusion(s):
-my photos suck
-I think higher of others than others think of me
-I am not voting in a normalized manner (average should be 5.5 for normalized voting) I am slightly voting lower than the middle of the bunch.
stphw, you are a member, post the image to your portfolio (if only temporary) for the people to see...

Ok, I knew this would happen about access.

Try again:

Unfortunately, comparing the two numbers is like comparing apples and oranges. The votes cast is your votes for a very diverse range of images which in the long run will hover around 5 (if you vote on everything). Whereas the votes you receive are on your individual images and if you are improving your average will go up.

It is like comparing apples and oranges. And photography is an artform made up of a variety of skills. I just thought is was an interesting sideline issue.

The votes cast average will not hover around 5 for many people. They haven't chosen 5 to be the average mark they give out. Many of the data points on the graph represent people who have been here for years. Some are close to 4, some close to 6.

Not everyone votes on all images in a challenge.

I think that maybe the high scorers will maybe also score others a bit higher.
Don't know why, but I've seen a few 6+ avg scorers also have a 6 avg vote cast.
Not all, but I've seen a few.
It would be easyer to explain I guess.
By scoring other photo's higher, your photography will not improve, but maybe by taking the time and searching for a way to improve your photography, you will end up seeing things in other members photo's and scoring them Higher.

Hmm, lost myself here, don't understand what I was trying to say..

A problem with this is the assumption that each voter votes on all entries in a given challenge. A member could vote only on ones they like or, in turn, only on ones they don't like. This would skew their average either high or low.

I did a more universal sampling last weekend. Here's a post I placed back on Saturday:

It's nice to only vote on the ones you like however that does skew the stats.

I've considered that, when I vote I go through the entire group.

This was a general statement. With the 20% rule and the large number of entries this can happen. (It wasn't directed at you)

It's nice to know that you like the images on this site.
