We got way off topic in this thread... "I mostly blame myself." (sandlot)
So does anyone else agree with me that nabisco overacted in taking down his prints. I mean it was a university security officer (at every college I know of, they have no authority anyways) tells him to remove his dog and beer. Then all the bent up frustration of dealing with changes in dates, holdups, and maybe he had one too many of those beers :) made him snap and just pull his prints. (At least thats how I understand the story). Nabisco correct me where im wrong.

I would love the idea of someday being able to bring said dog, beer, etc. to a art show hanging. I've had the eye-opening experience of moving from one of the greatest drinking capitals of the world, New Orleans, to my current bible-belt home on the northern border of Louisiana and Arkansas. I have been to party the party Mecca of colleges, LSU, and currently attend Louisiana Tech in Ruston; home of non-beer drinking (not allowed on campus) but crawfish eating Southern Pentecostals and Baptists. I feel your pain Nsbca and love your work, but I can't sympathize much with your position. Living in these almost contradicting places, I've found that, many times, I need to put away my ego or face the wrath of some over/under zealous bureaucrat that feels they have to follow the rules to the "T". It's not necessarily that you're right and they're wrong (although, in my drinking opinion / New Orleans soul, they're very wrong), but it's boiling down to: you play by their rules or you don't and you go home probably empty handed. I definitely envy you though, for being able to walk away from the experience and accomplishment (and money too) over beer and pets.
PS- please note, I rarely if ever follow my own advice; to the chagrin of my a$$; and so, I am in no way passing judgment. In fact, depending on the day, I just might have cussed them out while storming out, but honestly, later I would've quietly regretted it.

I think he felt justified in what he did and most readers (myself included) didn't have a lot of the background to the story - at least not initially.
I personally don't think it would be professional to bring beer & the dog, even if a precedent had been set. But there are different acceptable formalities and protocols in different industries and environments and I'll give nbsca the benefit of the doubt. After all, he is the one who has to live with the consequences if any.

Back home in Romania drinks are almost a must in an exhibit(even if you hold it in a campus). Adding the fact that the beer was for the helpers than I might say that nobody will help you unless you treat them some drinks. Or maybe we drink too much back home...
As for the dog issue...what issue? It's a family member so who cares?
I can not judge the situation but I certainly wonder if I would like to live there! |
It's the same here, whenever anything takes place in the village it's usually held and the primary school and there is allways beer and wine available even if the event is based around the kids. Even in MacDonalds here it's normal to order a beer with your burger.
I guess life is rather different in 'The Land of the Free'

eric you just said my point better than I did (much nicer to I might add) I dont condone what the cop did and If I were the cop I would have pet the dog and asked for a beer (now thats an occupation you can really get in trouble in for drinking)
I just disagree with nabisco's stubbornness, but then again he's not me and im sure glad im not him
On a side note: Isnt the fact that he found his dog in the swamp rather hickish. I mean almost every dog I have ever had has been a stray or an offspring of one of my strays, but I never found them in a swamp. Maybe we are only semi hicks in iowa :)

A security officer who brought a city police officer and a county sheriffs deputy with him. Never said shit about the beer before that moment. I had one of the college deans helping me hang the work, who seemed to have no problem whatsover with the beer the dog or the beaver. Cutting off my nose? Well screw it. Sometimes you have to draw the line. I drew mine and if you think that is not where you have drawn yours, that would be because that is who you are. I really don't like shows anyway. Too much bullshit. So many people who haven't a clue comeing up and telling you how great your work is. They wouldn't know what great was without someone else to tell them what it was. I would rather sit in the woods and just take pictures. So what if no one sees them. That is not really the reason I take pictures anyway.

LOL! I actually found my dog (a stray puppy abandoned by her mother) in class, while the teacher was lecturing, at Louisiana Tech's College of Business.

Definately recommend going some time). Drinking is lightyears ahead of the rest of the country, so drinking while working is more exceptable, it is here, but not in the professional manner as setting up for a gallery. We do take cases of beer into the darkroom, hope to someday get pony keg in next to the print dryer.
But would you walk away from potentially several thousand dollar job, because a college student with a badge tells you to put your beer and dog in the truck. |
Truthfully? I'm not sure, but if it happened the way it did in this thread, maybe. Then of course I don't own a dog or drink beer. Now if I brought my wife's rabbit and a pitcher of kool-aid and they told me to leave.... |

I don't think there would have been a problem if it was ONLY the security gaurd, however the county sherrif was brought in with him, and that escalated the whole thing to another level. |

Technically, I think you're closer to a coonass than a hick if we're talking swamps ;)

On another side note I had taken portraits of the city police officer's two young duaghters at the request of his ex-wife a few month ago. So after the dean told him that the security guard was out of line he comes up, apoligizes, shakes my hand and asks how he can get a couple of prints of the kids for his mother. Then he holds the door for me while I load my truck back up.

I can guess on that. I'm freinds with several of the local cops and was talking with one of them just tonight, he was bored and stopped in to use the bathroom. Spent about 30 minutes just BSing. Kind of makes me wonder what he'd do if he ever pulled me over for speeding.
nsbca7, I understand where you're coming from. Maybe they'll call you back in the morning. |

Wait, im narrow minded because I called him a hick, while at the same time called my self a hick. Its called sarcasm. How about you go to bed lentil and wake up with a sense of humor. Almost every comment I have said has been in humor, kpriest gets it, and im pretty sure everyone else but nabisco gets it.
Also, to clear up some confusion, he got his dog from the swamp, not me. I find most of mine in the wintertime when them darn city folk drop there black labs off because they got to big, and we bring them in from the cold.

see now that last thread nabisco was funny. I love the irony of him holding the gate. What I dont understand is if it became so laid back that the cop would open the gate for you, then why did you feel mistreated enough to pull your prints. Especially when your friends with several higher ups in the college.

Mr Battilana, I respect your actions. Maybe it's because I too have opted out of the constraints of society, or maybe it's because I live in a place that's not got lost in political correctness and conformity, but I see nothing wrong with the idea of your dog being in attendance (here it's normal for people to bring their dog's into the office with them on a daily basis), and the idea of a beer for those helping out in the set-up is a nice friendly gesture.
How people can take this as being such an issue is laughable, please people open your eyes, there is nothing wrong with this situation and do you really want to live in such a society that you are promoting with the applicaion of such strict conditions?

Way to go nbsca7. Don't sell out. Where the hell is your camera.
I can't believe people would make assumptions about trailer parks that is rude and uncalled for and I think SC should delete those posts. This is not what this site is about. I don't live in a trailer but I do find it rude and uncalled for that people would say something like that to someone. No I am not kidding and am very pissed about it. Deal with it. People shouldn't have to read crap like that.

Even as Martin's forum posts have often set him up as the object of ridicule, you gotta admit the guy can produce some great pics, and that's what we are supposed to be about here at dpc. And he is very willing to share his knowledge with others, sometimes in a way that we find rather direct. I give the man respect in this situation for having a standard and sticking by it, even in the face of considerable financial loss to himself.
The coonass hick from Alabama as cantankerous, eccentric artist more at home in the swamp than on the oh so pc campus. I wanna make room for this man in my world.
