I am going to be going to New Mexico soon and will obviusly want to take my camera with me but I wanted to know if I should take my tripod with me or if its not worth it.
If anyone has any expireance with stuff like this please coment. |

| That is always a kicker! What to do - What I did is I got one of those pocket tripods - since I can keep in on me and if need be there is usually something to put it on to get it up off the ground if need be - but at least it will hold the camera - and you are not incovienced at all ... give it some thought |

A beanbag type support is another alternative and is more versatile than a mini tripod as it molds to whatever surface you put it on.

I have an second tripod that folds small enough to fit in my baggage. I carry a hopsack bag (empty) that I can fill with stones or sand, whatever's handy, and hang on the tripod to weight it down and stabilize it if needed. If I'm driving, of course, I take the Bogen.

I just purchased the Manfrotto 4-piece monopod. It's got a solid construction and although it does NOT provide the stability of a tripod it definitely offers an improvement over handheld.
A monopod elimates the X-axis of movement (up & down) while giving you a fulcrum point on you y and z axis (left to right, front to back).
On the flip side, the unit I bought collapses down to a narrow 20" object. The unit I tested felt very well made. I would not be surprised if there are people out there using one of these as a collapsible hiking stick. *lol*
