On my first submission - minimalism
A comment asks a question, how do I reply without breaking any rules?
04/27/2005 02:36:55 PM · #2
I don't reply until the voting is over but some people do anyway.

Perhaps it would be better to wait until voting is over to make any kind of reply?

Dash it! Beaten to it while I was typing.

So to ask the corresponding question, what should you/do you do when someone replies to a comment during a challenge, thus breaking (or at the very least bending, the anonymity requirement?

This is why I have chosen to hide myself during voting.

Any SC online who want to answer this?

I'm not SC but I can venture a guess...
We have terms of service, and in addition, we have (unwritten) DPC etiquette, whatever that is.

I would recommend that you leave it alone. When commenting, do not ask questions. If the image + title does not do it for you and you need more info, do your best to judge the photo without additional information. This way you'll see it as all other viewers.

If you are at the receiving end of the question-comment, do not reply. Mark it down for future reference - if the question was related to something you obviously missed and should have been accentuated either by better editing or by a better title, suck it up and wait for the challenge to end.

I hope this helps.

There is no hard & fast rule against responding to comments during voting, however I personally share the view that anonymity is paramount, and therefore I will not change a vote, or respond, based on a response to mone of my comments. I now have my identity hidden as well, so it's simply not possible. I feel this is the best way.

I'm slightly claustrophobic...do I really have to put a bag over my head when I'm voting?

=)

Gees, has the anonymity group taken over?
I have replied occasionally to a comment on an entry. i have replied to replies about my comments. all depends on what it is. One should not make rash responses in the heat of the moment...

if a commenter does NOT want to be contacted, then they can hide their identity during voting. I assume if they have chose NOT to hide, then they are not opposed to a response.

When i respond to a comment i try to identify the photo (usually by quoting their comment). I know when i get a response to a comment i have left and there is no way to indentify the phtoto, the discussion pretty much ends. I might leave 20 or 30 comments, and perhaps 3 of them are very similar in nature - unless i can recall the photo/comment I really have no way to follow up on their clarification.

A proper explanation/interpretation might sway me 1 point voting wise (usually not though) but it is really hard to make me move a vote 3 or 4 points - if i feel it does not meet the challenge for example, you can explain it until next fall but that isn't going to change my feelings, or vote.

It's not so much that I mind responses to comments - after all, ya gotta start a l'arnin' dialog somewhere. :)
I think the issue is more of when a person pm's about a comment during the voting period. This negates the whole premise of remaining anonymous to ensure fair voting. The image should stand on its own without explanation or it receives an unfair advantage.

Was the question WTF? Just curious. ;-)

It was how do you reply to a comment, should you reply immeiately, and what do you do about people who do reply during the voting phase.

Hmmm... Was that for me? I believe the initial post has been answered several times over. The consensus was IGNORE in both cases. :)

It is not against the rules to reply during the voting period. If you do not want people to reply to your comments go anonymous.

Just one small point:
Sometimes it's helpful to the 'voter' to know added information about your shot.
Responding doesn't have to be ragging on the person. :)

Love to, but I'm not a paid member yet, so I can't.

Yumpin' Yiminy. I thought I was being helpful. Apparently not.

1) you can reply without giving yourself away
2) never reply immediately. have a drink or a cup of coffee first
3) if you don't want replies, go anonymous, or leave a threat at the top of your bio. if you can handle replies without getting wiggy, then encourage dialogue. my bio states "Feel free to PM me during challenges i probably won't change my score or comment, but if it makes you feel better, go for it!"

No - I just wasn't sure if you were responding to MY stupid sarcastic, not helpful post. It sounded like you were trying to clarify the original question again. :) My bad if my response came off wrong.
