nice website, did you design it yourself
04/27/2005 02:15:02 PM · #4
yea. I quick made it the last few days. Its actually only one page so it wasn't too bad. Everything else is running through asp and a database.

Did anyone have are hard time seeing the other links under the photos?

looks good. you might want to apply some css to the horizontal scroll bar to make it blend into the sight a little more.

You know what? I never even thought about that. I am using window's classic on my XP so it is pretty much the same color. I just changed it over to the XP look and it looks like crap.

I'll have to mess with it.

Thanks...

You could but only the IE portion of users will see the color change. People not using IE will see their normal scrollbar color.

True. I will try to get it to look similar for everyone but when it comes down to it. Majority of the web users still are IE users to if you have to decide, majority always rules... But I will see what I can do.

Some thoughts...

There is no DTD at the top of your page so all browsers will render the page in quirks mode. May or may not be what you want.

When there are enough images to require the horizontal scroll, selecting an image that you would normally have to scroll to causes the image to pop-up but the thumbs reset to the starting position requiring more horizontal scrolling. May become annoying if you have a lot of photos.

Doesn't fit on a 800x600 screen without a horizontal and vertical scroll bars. Some people may not notice the links on the bottom.

May want to switch to an external style sheet rather than internal. It would make changing your site design much easier. You just change one page instead of all of them. EDIT: I see you have a database, you may be pulling that part as a header for all of them. If so, disregard.

What program did you use to create this? It's a really sharp site and layout!

(NOT SURE WHAT YOU MEAN BY DTD)

(I KNOW ABOUT THIS ONE AND I AM GOING TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT)

(I GIVE UP PLEASING 800x600)

(THERE IS ONLY ONE PAGE TO CHANGE)

THANKS FOR THE COMMENTS BY THE WAY.

yes. this is what I do for a living though so this isn't much. Here are a few of my others:

Where I work:
NextGen.com (a lot of it you can't see in the customer section)
We also have an intranet but you wouldn't be able to get to that.

Side Work:
KdSmithauctions.com
goddardpreschool.com

I have a few more but they aren't really worth mentioning...

HTML - Macromedia Dreamweaver
Graphics - Photoshop
And the code was written within the code section of Dreamweaver...

The DTD or Document Type Definition or doctype goes on the top of a properly constructed webpage to tell the browser to what standard you are writing. This allows the browser to (hopefully) properly render your content in a standards compliant way.

So for example if you are using HTML 4.01 transitional the first thing on your webpage would be...

If you marked up your webpage based on XHTML 1.0 strict you would use...

Without a DTD the browser assumes you've written bad or sloppy code and renders the page in quirks mode. The result being pages are rendered in the proprietary way they were before there was an emphasis placed on standards and consequently tags may not function as expected.

Since you are using Dreamweaver you may be interested in this page on modifying Dreamweaver to produce valid XHTML. Although it looks like your code is more HTML 4.01 transitional. A run through the W3C's Validator should also prove useful.

Thanks for that, I'll take a look. You seem to know a bunch. Perhaps you might know how I would go about keeping the scrollbar from going back to the left when clicking on an image that is all the way on the right. I really don't want to use frames so I was hoping there was some code out there I could use instead...

Thanks...

I haven't been able to think of good way to do it. If frames are out one option would be to not show all the images but only show x on either side of the selected image. That would prevent the scrolling back to where you were but of course people may not see all of your images unless you included indicator images on either side. Something like a little arrow that appears when there are more than 2x+1 images. It could also be accomplished with flash but I don't particularly care for flash.

Yea. I originally was using flash but its just a pain in the butt to update. I'll come up with something. Thanks for everything...
