I don't mean to bitch and moan...but here I go...

My result from the Free Study was dismal. I had really hoped to score at least a little higher (I know your thinking...'donĂ¢€™t we all'). I noticed that a lot more pictures of "people" appeared in some of the higher echelons of rank, is this a normal trend. I have in the past, avoided people pictures and gone more with landscapes. Is it wrong to do this? What am I doing wrong here? Please be honest, rip apart some of my pictures (one of those comment on mine and ill comment on yours deal). I'm not going to throw my camera out my windows if your mean...so please...I need help!

Well, its just an average photo of a popular subject, which equals an average score. Popular subjects need a little more creativity/interest in them to get above average scores, just my opinion. I hope this helps...

Left you a comment on your free study photo, which actually scored respectably... a quick look at your portfolio shows that you're definitely headed in the right direction, just look at loads of photos you love and ask yourself what makes them so special and how you can achieve similar.

I'll echo that. Choice of subject is critical and if you're going to do something cliche or common, you need to do something extraordinarily creative to get a higher score.

My philosophy is to try to find a strength and exploit it to compensate for any weaknesses in other areas. Of course, that is all relevant to getting higher scores in the challenges. As far as improving your images - you're doing a fine job and ultimately YOU are the only voter that counts - at least on the hobby side of photography.

My 2 cents.

well laughter is certainly someting i do often enough, and at my age, peer recognition isn't terribly difficult either. but i feel the need to branch out, do something more than expected, and thats what has brought me here.

2 more pennies from me...

Focus on your vision, ideas and creativity - not on what the voters liked or what you predict they will like. My favorite thing to do is to get an idea in my head and be able to use the camera and the computer to bring it to life. The majority of these visions break all the editing rules, so I couldn't enter them in challenges, but the challenge entries help me improve my photography skills and also help direct my visions.

Just view the challenge results and comments as a small part of the overall learning experience here.

I have only entered one challenge so far and the voting hasn't started yet, but I think that using the critiques to help improve the way you portray your own personal vision is the best way to percieve them. View everything as constructive.... unless it's just plain mean... then chase the person who wrote it with a red hot poker and.... well.... fill in the blanks.
