Ok, Let me start by saying YES I know everyone is entitled to there opinion and I accept that, and for the most part I am please with my
score, but I have to get on my soap box for just a moment! LOL
In my quest to get a 6 pt image I thought this one would do it, but
it fell just short at 5.8. Then I look at the voting results and this
is what I saw:
1 1
2 0
3 8
4 21
5 72
6 76
7 34
8 17
9 7
10 2

did this really deserve a 1?
The only reason I'm even asking is because if I subract this one vote
my score jumps to 6.08. Oh, soooooo close!!!

Whoever gave you a 1,stinks. This is a great shot!

Nope, it sure doesn't. Adorable shot and a 5.8 is nothing to sneeze at. :-) Don't ya just hate those pesky little undeserved 1's?

Like I said, I'm pretty please with the 5.8 it is my second highest
so for that I'm thankful, just kinda wondering what others thought about
the 1

David, This question comes up all the time - I've asked it myself. I honestly believe there are jerks out there who participate in the challenge and vote everyone very, very low to increase their chances of getting a ribbon. If you notice, even many of the ribbon winners have scores of one's and two's. It's just a sad fact of life we have to live with. And no, you're shot didn't deserve a one! (or any three's) :)

subtracting out that 1 gives you a 5.8228

on the other hand, do you think it deserved 2 10's? I'm not trying to be jerk, just saying that many people use the ENTIRE scale when they vote ... and the top score and bottom score are both usually undeserved.

you had 1381 total points divided by 238 total votes

subtract the 1

now you have 1380 total points divided by 237 total votes

5.8228

I must have added wrong cause I used the same formula!

no big deal ...

that's actually good news, it means your very undeserved 1 didn't make or break your personal goal :)

you'll break 6, it's just a matter of time ... your stuff is very good

Personally, I find it more distasteful to characterize someone as a jerk, or a stink(er), for using the whole scale and having a taste differing from one's own, than to give a vote of 1 (or 10) to an image that, in your opinion, doesn't deserve it.

I used to not believe in Trolls. ;-)

...I'm not opposed to giving out 1's = I do it occasionally. But I wonder how the scores would change if the scorers identity were revealed after the voting period.

And just imagine the forum activity and flaming PMs then! Meltdown!

Here's a thought though - how about an algorithm that tracks each user's voting pattern and calculates how far above or below the average score given for each entry when compared to all other votes received and comes up with a "Voter Rating" that is displayed in the user's profile. It would be a little different from the "Average Vote Given" because it just tracks how often you stray to one extreme or the other.

Relax Dave, did you see what my Tack pic got? LOL so much for last minute entries..haha. Your pic was good, almost a 6...you're getting there. I think some folks feel that a lot of pics of kids are family album types of things unless the shot is unusual..

Not to change the subject to a positive one but I have to say I am excited I finally made it through a challenge without receiving any 1s or 2s... Still didn't get my 6 though.

Not to get TOO much off topic, but this is something along these lines that I've always wondered...

When I do my voting (i'm a newbie!) I take into consideration the constraints of the contest, the quality of the image, artistic elements, yadda yadda. But my point is this.....

Do most people vote so that they have at least 1 ten and 1 one? In essence, are we voting a bell curve?

Or if there aren't any photos that you feel deserve a 10, what do you compare that to? The others in the challenge? Or the other photos in the world?

i think you misunderstood me (or i'm misunderstanding you). I was potentially calling myself a jerk for asking if he thought he deserved a 10 ... not refering to anyone else as being a jerk for any reason.

i use the 1 and the 10 ... quite often :)

You might find the Karma system of voting that has been proposed on a number of occasions to be of interest. It is discussed at length in the thread and a couple of threads linked from that one. It addresses voting in a similar to what you have described.

Sharpness seems to be on her shoulders. If there was more sharpness in the eyes the image would've probably a bit higher from most people. I would've scored it a "6" or "7".

I often have no tens and no ones. This may be objectionable by some, but I vote on the individual photo using the entire scale. I keep my mouse over the 5 and as I look at the image, my cursor just drifts one way or the other or I just say "eh" and click the 5. When I have voted on all the submissions, I go to the page that shows the thumbnails with all the groupings and then I do a little comparison voting and bump some up or down and comment on ones I feel compelled to.

I have so far voted on half the entries in the minimalism challenge and I think all but 2 or 3 of the images were crowded into the 3 - 6 range. Not an impressive challenge so far (my entry included).
