I gave it a 7. However my guess and I could be wrong, is that even though the quality of the photo is very good, it is the content. Basically it is one color, perhaps they think it is boring. I too am not that partual to macro flower shots. I see too many and they are beginning to all look the same to me. I could be wrong?

I didn't vote, but if I did I would have scored it a 6. The focus and exposure seem very good. I don't care for the composition, with the main flower sitting at the bottom center of the frame and alot of dark background across the top. I don't think that framing really adds anything to the view of the flower. I also think that, while the exposure is good and there seems to be plenty of light, the lighting itself appears rather flat, with no interest. All in all, I would say the "technical" side of it is well done, but maybe the "artistic" (and most subjective!) side doesn't suit me as well. Hope this helps.

Ok, I had two issues with it.
1 The light was just too harsh for me. When I see these types of pics
I really like to see nice soft light that really allows you to see all
the detail in the flower.

2 I would like to see this cropped a little tighter. There is just too much empty black space on the left and the top.

The color in this is it major attraction, I wouldn't add any more
colors to it. I think that would only take away from.

also, a score of 5.4 is not really low!
as for averages the way I see them
8 = Incredible in every aspect
7 = technically and compostionally superior
6 = well done techically and compositionally sound but room to do better
5 = still well done but has a flaw or two that needs to be corrected
4 = has some flaws that are unforgivable and should be kept in mind for the future
3 = If someone ends with an average in the 3's they should take a little more time in working there submission, and don't rush it!

edit: typo
