OK, I have never considered myself a wildlife photographer, nor have I been interested enough in it to really work at the subject. However, as we were headed into Pantelleria Island, off of Sicily, this falcon wandered by. Our theory is that he (or she, I know next to nothing about them), was tired and lost, as it was a foggy and windy morning.
He flew a couple of inspection laps around the boat, and apparently deciding we wouldn't eat him, came in for a landing right behind the pilot house, lighting on the A/C unit. After all 11 people on board had rushed upstairs to have a look, and camera shutters blazed away, he sat quietly until the A/C compressor kicked on, at which time he beat a hasty, if brief retreat.
He wound up riding in with us until we were in sight of land, and off he went to pursue whatever tired, hungry, lost falcons do on foggy mornings.
OK, discussion and critiques are welcome.
Edited to add a couple more shots...

Looks sort of like Kestrel, but I can't tell how big he is. Are you sure he was Italian, and not just a tourist?

the face could use a bit of lightening.
cool story to the image - rare a wild predator would rest so close to humans.

A slightly under-compensated (-1 2/3 as a start) fill flash would have turned this into a money shot. Even dead-on from a built-in would help as long as it was dialed down. Great detail and framing, and the story is great. This might not be a top-seller, but you've got a great memory shot from the experience.

Maybe he ate too many capers and had a stomach ache. Cool experience! |

This looks very much like a Kestrel, judging the prominent spots, it probably a juvenile.
