I see there is a lot of demand for minors having contests of there own. What if DPC was to make a 'kids zone' or something similar for all the minors. Not sure but it may increase users and then they could have it seperate from adult forums etc.

I think that is an awesome idea. My 10yr old would love it.

I want to emphasize that this is my own personal opinion, and does not reflect the positionn of the site, or the SC at large.
I know weh have many minors on the site, competing in the normal challenges. Some have been as young as six. Until today (Happy b-day Ben!) we have had a minor as a member of the SC! I feel that, especially in the open challenges, kids can compete ver will with the adults. They have tremendously open minds, they often see very effectively, and just seem to have a great perception of what works in a photo. I don't know if creating a separate area for kids to compete is a great idea or not.

Like Kirbic, this is only my opinion.

In theory, I like the idea. In practice though, I think it would be difficult to "monitor" because we have no way to "prove" how old someone really is. I can enter any number I want in the age field.

Just a thought.

Yup... I have seen in the past some peeps here funning with their profiles where the age didn't match the individuals accomplishments over the years...it would be a tough one to police.

Also as Kirbic stated young-uns compete quite nicely in the basic challenges and do quite well...they add fresh ideas and views to the mix. They want to excel for the right reasons and I have noticed most take constructive critisism better that some others on the site.

That's a sad state of affairs on this sight if we can't make a kid zone for KIDS and greedy adults couldnt stay out of it. I think a kid zone is a great idea, because people can be very harsh in their critiques of photos (I have read many that were unnecessarily mean), and I would hope that people would bear in mind that a child had taken the shot and critique a little more softly. My son is new to photography, and a harsh critique might thwart his "confidence" enough to make him quit. (or at least quit trying on this sight).

I agree that kids have a remarkable ability to "see" a good shot, my son is already really getting good at it. I think the kid zone would be great for the critiquing aspect if nothing else.

I like the idea in general, but it'd be complicated to set up and manage, for both the time it'd take D&L to code up, and the enforcement of real ages. In addition, we can only have users under 13 with signed parental permission (due to US child protection laws), which would both limit our kids userbase and create more signup overhead for D&L (if it got popular)...

Maybe sometime open two challenges at once... the same challege but one only for kids 13 and below. It would be interesting to see how the kids' entries would vary from adults and hopefully it would keep the adults in their own sector. If they did ribbon then it will be in their record that they won a child's challenge.

I like the idea alot. I'm not too keen on younger kids being exposed to some things on this site. That's why I post when my kids are asleep ;-)

I had been kicking around the idea of creating a site for that purpose. I have one waiting in the wings and have looked at several open source applications to use, but I don't like the way they work as much as I like the features this site has. I would be willing to set it up and maintain it (it's what I do for a living), but would really be happy if I could clone this site for it.

One of the great things about DPC is that the kids get to compete with the adults on a completely even and anonymous basis.

They can all "take" hearing negative comments -- learning from mistakes is essential, and requires making mistakes and being told about them. I think people are underestimating the kids ... I'd venture to guess that most of them have seen "worse" than anything hosted at DPC on their TV, probably hundreds of times. They can learn from discussing what makes a picture "nasty" as well, even though it won't happen that often.

I could be wrong but one of the greatest elements of entering competitionsthat don't distinguish between young old, male female, able disabled pro or ameteur is that all entries are judged purely on merit, hence making them so valuable.

I hope this is the case

Nobody suggested NOT allowing kids to participate here.

I think it is best to leave it how it is with the kids competing with the adults. Monitoring your kids is the best way to fix a problem. I am buying my kids cameras and hope to get them registered here to give them something to be interested in and to compete in. I think it is best for them to compete with everyone. If they get bad comments it teaches them to take the good with the bad. If they get slanderous comments then I am sure SC or the admins can delete them upon a valid request. For the most part everyone here is very nice.

I have a daughter(9y.o) that is into photography as much as i am( she has even requested a camera like mine for her birthday instead of any toys) she asked me just the other night if she could at least become a registered user like me. i thought there was an age restriction...boy is she gonna be happy when i tell her she can! It really doesnt matter to me wether there is a "kids zone" or not as i am always sitting here with her whenever she is online to answer and questions she has about a photo. she is very open to different views of photographers and greatly appriciates others views. ok...im going to get her signed up now...thanks for letting me brag about muh baby for a minute :)

I think there is some form you have to sign and mail to them. If SC can chime in on where to find that form then I will also register my kids. Good luck to your daughter.

lol I guess I should tell people that I don't have kids and I like kids as much as I like seeing baby, flower or cat photos. I just thought maybe it would be a good idea.

Ken, that would be so great!
I'd love to sign up my ten year old in a place where language and content are monitored, the criticism is encouraged to be honest but gentle, and perfection is something to strive for, but not expected.
I'd be willing to pay a modest membership and even help run the show.

What you need is in this thread, along with links to some other threads discussing kids' participation.

Happy Birthday Ben!

I'm currently a minor on this site, but come the end of May, I will no longer be =). I am for and against the idea, I have really grown in my photography skills in the year and half I've tried out photography and joined here. If I had been in a "Kids Zone," I don't think I would be as good as I am today. But for kids, say, under 10-12, it would be good for them not to see some of the content on this site.

I know this would take much time and effort, but if something like a side site like kids.dpchallenge.com could be setup for the younger age generation, then people of DPChallenge could vote/comment on challenges specifically setup for them. But then you run into all the monitoring problems, or just the problem of not having enough sign up, a challenge of 7 participants?

Another solution could be having a special registration on DPC for the younger generation that would automatically block out "questionable" content. One extension of this could be that the photos that they submitted to a challenge would have a special mark or something to note that it was a child entering. But there is probably alot of problems with that too.
