There have been a lot of talk about commenting on photographs and we even have an upcoming challenge that is base on comments made vs. comments received. So I believe that commenting is on a lot of people̢۪s minds. I was wondering if DPC could reward users for there comments. I have thought of a way they could do this but I don̢۪t know if it is feasible or possible and what kind of code would be required but I would like to share my thought with you.
Increase Profile space with comments made during challenges and in user profiles.
1. When you make a comment on a challenge photograph during the challenge period you earn 1 credit.
2. When you make a comment on a picture posted in a profile you receive a ½ credit.
3. For every 1000 credits earned DPC will increase your profile space by 5 MB.
4. One or two word comments will not count and comments that are not checked helpful will not count towards credits.
I know this would take some work and may not be feasible but it̢۪s a starting point for discussion. Anyone care to elaborate or offer any other suggestions.

I don't know how I feel about the helpful comment option being checked off as a requirement. I almost always go back through comments I have just made to see which ones were considered not helpful so I can improve my commenting skills. Lately I have been noticing that some pictures have numerous varied comments and not one of them was checked helpful. It’s unlikely that not one of the comments was helpful and far more likely that whomever took the picture is just too lazy (or bitter) to bother checking the helpful box. Which really ticks me off as it makes your stats look bad and defeats the effort you have made to provide commentsâ€Â¦..but that’s a whole different forum topic. =) |

I have to agree with you there. I have seen picture in one challenge that finished very good and had double digit comments and none were checked helpful. Maybe 1/2 credit could be given to the commenter for taking the time to comment. It would be great if DPC could have a box on the side of everyones homepage [like the poll boxes] that tell you that you have comments unresolved. Then add another button for the person that received the comment, giving them two buttons (helpful and not helpful). They could would need to check one of the two boxes.
Like I said this would take some coding for DPC but I believe it would increase comments/critiques that help others learn. And when you find yourself commenting on photographs in some ways it make you learn as well.
Thank you for your input. Anyone else want to discuss this?

In general I think this is a very good idea. As for "Comment Received" buttons, how about instead of

i too think this is a good idea..personally i like the two seperate check boxes better....this will also make the "lazy " ones take the time to read and check comments. it will also make people a little easier to make a comment about a photo..more indepth comments too

i'll see that and raise ya one...
what about a Instant PM button that could be added to forums right next to the [Report Post] button, and added to image details right above the [Add to Favorites] button. that way you could fire off a pm without having to go through to someone's profile page... |

Your DPC homepage could look something like this. Letting you know you have unresolved comments.
By click the resolve button it would take you to your Comments Received Page so you can see which comments you have not checked helpful or non-helpful.

Hmm... this sounds fairly similar to the Critique Credits system I proposed a while back as part of the Critique Club restructuring - the problem with giving credits for just comments is that they are much harder to monitor (due to sheer numbers), but I guess it could be feasible...

I believe it would be feasible. If everyone seen that "Comment Status" box above there submissions some would want it gone so they don't have to scroll down to see there entries. Thus I believe they would go and resolve there comments. As one user asked in a thread the other day, "Could you please put the poll below our submissions. Getting tired of scrolling down". See it may help. Just a thought. |

Incentives for more comments only means more frivolous and less useful comments will be made in order to meet the incentive.
I prefer to have people comment on my images only when they want to.

That may be your opinion and you may not find some comments helpful. That would be a good reason NOT to check them helpful. Therefore the commenter would not receive a credit. |
