I'm looking for a walk around lens, I really do like the idea of a Nikon 24-120 VR but am concerned about sharpness issues (and currently cannot afford it). The Tamron 24-135 has got good reviews and I've taken a serious interest in this lens, but now I've got the chance at getting a Tamron 28-200 for 200 Swiss francs (approx USD160), should I buy it?

The lens in new and unopened, from a store with full warranty etc.

I have a Nikon 70-210 which I love and am pretty sure that I will use in preference if I'm shooting in the 100mm+ range, so I'm not worried about the Tamron having issues at full zoom, additionally if I'm shooting <50mm I'll use my 18-70. I find myself far too often in the 50-100 range where I'm constantly swapping lenses, this means that the Tamrom will become my main lens (until I can afford something better).

So, help me out here - should I get it or wait a another month or 2 for the 24-135 or even longer for something better?

From what I've heard (which I probably should add, isn't much) I'm not sure that the 28-200 is exactly the best quality piece of glass going round (hey you've gotta compromise on something with that kind of focal range). But at $160 US I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be able to say no either.

Anders,

This is exactly the issue, I know that there is much better glass around, but at that price it's hard to ignore :)

Anyone else with any thoughts?

I'm really happy with the Tokina 24-200mm lens, Only being able to zoom out to 28mm would bother me. It's also a quality piece of glass, with an excellent reputation of being a complete steal at it's price.

I basically Rule it. Not L glass but it can be worked with :)

I just picked up the TAMRON AF28-300MM F/3.5-6.3 XR Di LD ASPHERICAL (IF) MACRO and think its a must have lense. Great for walking around with and excellent crispness. I'll post some shots later. I just thought, it may be a little over budget for you.

Okies, I bought it.

I went in the store and it turned out that it was wrongly marked-up and should by 399 not 199, still got it for 199 though :)

I think that I'll have to finish work early and go for a bit of a walk tonight :)
