My low score in the ‘People’ Challenge was no surprise. I’ve been here long enough to have a fair idea of how well my photo will do before I submit it. The score wasn’t the point with this oneâ€Â¦

This scene was, for me, an excellent study in people, from two perspectives: 1) the scene itself, and 2) the reaction of DPCers to my rendering. The soft image was what I came up with, given the very brief moment I had to click the shutter button.

The image is of tourists on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. I positioned myself about 75-100 yards across the street with my 20D and 70-200 f4.0L lens. The loving couple gazing at the Falls (albeit, not concentrating very hardâ€Â¦) was not the focus, contrary to what some thought. The focus really was the composite of people from different walks of life, each in his/her own little world. What the men/boys were doing with their hands inspired the title (...in case you don't know, it's from an old spiritual from the 50's [I believe]). Ken Priest's (kpriest) comment pretty much nailed what I had in mind with this image. Others came close, but what made this challenge a success for me was knowing that I caused 21 of you to pause and study my work.

I like titles. I believe they can enhance and bring into focus a photograph that otherwise may be tough to grasp. In this case, however, the title is as open to interpretation, and as dependent upon perspective, as the image itself. That was my point.

I actually liked your photo, and I "Got" what you were trying to do. I thought it was pretty cool that you got such a variety of people in one shot!

Thanks, Jennifer. What I get from DPC is an opportunity to really play with photography, ..to try different things and run them by a diverse audience. It's fascinating to see how so many diverse people react to and interpret a photo that wasn't made with the intention of pleasing everyone. I wonder how many of us really appreciate the significance of all this (i.e., the opportunity given by DPC)?

This image was "found" by waiting and watching. It's by no stretch of the imagination a masterpiece. It's just an example of the kind of scene that presents itself countless times and in countless ways. For me it was a study and seemingly for a few others as well. -len
