Is there any reason for me not to get a "compatible" filter holder/adapter off eBay?

the holder itself is cheap enough, and as long as you picked the right size, I can't imagine anything could be wrong with it.
Secondhand filters may be scratched, but the holder would be foolproof.

Before you buy camera supplies off ebay, see my link. I always check the seller rating before purchasing an item, and the seller in question here had pretty good, actually he had excellent ratings on the day I bought from him, but it looks as though his business was "going under" and he ripped a lot of people off, on his way out the "see ya later suckers" door. He stopped replying to emails and I have yet to get a refund. Hopefully PayPal will help me get my dough back. I'm out about $70 right now for a 512 MB xD card. I have a dispute in the works, but as a warning to other DP users......ummm, don't buy anything from this guy.

Also, as far as buying cheaper supplies, I bought a wide-angle and telephoto attachment kit from ebay. The telephoto lens is absolute crap, as I didn't expect much from a cheaper lens anyway. However, it is virtually unusable, but the wide-angle is great for my camera. Works like a charm. I also grabbed up a 3-pc filter kit with the UV, polarizer, and the indoor flourescant lighting. The pink one fell apart right after I got it, so if there is any indication that they were made cheaply, there you go. The polarizer works well, and I use the UV one often when I do not have a lens hood on the camera, to protect the camera lens.

You should be alright with the purchase of an adapter, but make sure it isn't plastic or anything because then the threading might not line up properly, or be a little loose.

if you dont mind second hand stuff you might as well get a proper one! they are only a couple of $'s. The adaptor ring is a bit more pricey, but you might get lucky & get a job lot with a few filters to get you started. Can't recommend enough the circular polarizer & graduated filters.

Happy snapping
