You know....

I give up *pffsssstt*

I can't win, I have so many challenges where I've gotten "I don't see how this fits into the challenge or is related" so debated putting the text on it or not. And now the text is killing my score. And when I got to work I realized why. It appears too dark on some monitors. But on my laptop it looked fine.

*blast it*

I shouldn't have put the text....now I am getting the "great photo but I don't like the font/text/etc."

I'm getting alot of "I think your jewelry is to small in the picture". People have to realize that advertisements are usually in magazines that are A4 or larger. 3500px or something like that. If it were a "web jewelry advertisement" competition I would understand some of the comments. But it's not :)

Regarding the text I don't mark pictures down if I don't like the text. And I try to imagine how they would look on print in Vogue or Marie Claire or something like that.

New website ... txtchallenge.com

Yes...here we just evaluate text entries... *lol*

Maybe there should be two scores, one for the photo and one for the text advert.

Oh well...hopefully people will at least think mine was unique!!!!

Dont feel bad, I thought I did well but there are issues with my photo as well as my font. Some I knew prior but choose not to change. Keep tring.

Also I agree that some of the text is better then the photo's. This is a tough one to vote on, Am I wrong? Most photos have issues, is there a 10 in there?

Yeah...I guess most of us are photographers and NOT marketing agents...

That's probably why marketing agents walk around with lots of paper and not cameras...

That's really the issue. I was surprised to see some very good photos with some very bad text, but I guess I shouldn't be.

Anyway, Saj - the lesson is not "shouldn't have used text", it is "Should've checked the image on laptop AND desktop / CRT. I make this mistake all the time and I've got both sitting right in front of me.

Don't have a desktop....I moved to a 17" Desknote and otherwise have not regretted leaving my desktop behind (go rid of the desk too). Now I sit on the couch in front of the TV.

*lol*

Most of the negative comments on my entry are about the text (MOST - so far) but I imagine there would've been more had I not put any on there. *shrug*

Can't please everyone.

Reviving this thread a bit because I just started looking at the Jewelry entries myself.

As a one-time graphic design student, I learned a good bit about typography, and boy, there is a lot of bad typography in this challenge! Slapping in a bit of unformatted white or black text at an arbitrary size is just NOT going to work...

I wonder if there'd be any place for a typography tutorial on this site...

I havent voted on all the jewelry entries yet but I have seen a lot of badly used fonts, and placed texts. I have also seen quite a few really good ones as well...
I guess in cases like this with design elements the best way to go about things would be to ask for a second opinion preferably from someone who knows a thing or two about design. Text can be tricky but even a 10 minute overview can change the way you look at fonts and design for the rest of your life.
