I saw some comments in another thread the other night about getting 400 views and only 200 votes or something and I can't find the thread anymore but I believe that is misleading. The number of views goes up ach time the photo is viewed - even if it is viewed more than once by the same person. I frequently view images several times before casting a vote.

The one thing I do agree with is that the number of votes should be equla to, or greater than, the number of submissions (entries) for that challenge. Seems reasonable that everyone who enters, should have the courtesy to vote on the others.

my pennies worth on that subject.

The ratio of views/votes is a good measure of the impact of the image. Regardless of why they keep coming back, the more they come back the more impact the image had on them.

An individual can never vote on their own, so if just those that submit vote on an image it will have 1 less than the total number of submissions. However, I disagree that a person should feel compelled to vote on every image in a challenge just because they entered it. I am also opposed to the other extreme the comes up from time to time as a movement to prevent an individual from voting on challenges they have entered.

Two things that I see should always be true; one, the number of votes on a image should never be less than 20% of the number of people voting and two, the number of views should always be equal to or greater than the number of votes an any given image. If the first is true, the randomization of the images presented to be voted on is messed up and if the second is true someone found a way to vote on an image without looking at it.

I'll even say that after 50 to 75 votes on an image there is no real reason for it to get any more. It only takes a couple of dozen or so votes in a properly randomized presentation of the image to get the distribution of votes the image will get -- and that distribution includes the average.

In fact, to push it a bit further, I say that after voting the 20% required by the site to have a persons votes count, their time is better spent from that point on with a primary focus on placing comments instead of getting a vote placed upon every image. An individual will likely also place a vote along with the comments, if they choose to do so, but there really is no need for the focus to be on the votes after the 20% mark.

Just a few lines of sense -- common or not. ;)

I believe if you enter you should vote as well, but I find it very hard in a life that is full of responsiblities to vote and comment on every submission. I try hard to meet the stated requirements for voting and comments but find it nearly impossible to vote never mind comment on challenges that have 400 or 500 submissions.

Generally I first do a quick look at the images without voting theIn go back a second time to vote and comment on images that catch my eye. (regardless if they are 1's or 10's) After I meet the voting requirements I do a third look to go the extra mile in voting.

Yes everybody deserves a vote, secondly they should get comments, but the world isn't perfect and I don't think it is physically possible to hit everybody unless the rules are modified in some why.

My buck and a half,

Sounds like the volume of entries issue has been addressed (time it takes to vote on 400 to 500 photos) - a factor I have is using a dial-up connection. It takes a substantial period of time to vote on at least the minimum 20% at 40.0 Kbps. Pretty sure I'm not alone in this regard.

With time being against us when we have large challenges >500 submissions and multipule challenges it is hard to vote on all even though I would like to.

So I'm going to try this system

Entries vs. Votes in Percent
100-200 entries: 100% = 100 to 200 votes
201-300 entries: 80% = 161 to 240 votes
301-400 entries: 60% = 181 to 240 votes
401-500 entries: 40% = 160 to 200 votes
500+ entries: 30-40% = 150 to 200 Votes +

I think that I am right that the entries are randomised when you view them. If everyone gave their first 10 voted entries long, detailed critiques, pretty much everyone would receive a lot of detailed comments.
