Cool! They have a festival and photo contest announce just before we arrive! (We could storm the place this year and take home all their ribbons next year....) //www.nps.gov/nace/keaq/waterlilyfest-05.htm

(I'll try to find a reference on the web.)

I'll bet you are thinking of the National Arboretum and Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. They are more east than north of downtown but still within the District. Good places to shoot.

As this event continues to grow- please please please help me out by letting me know if you are thinking of coming. We have a list going with both definate and potential attendies. I need to get an idea of numbers so I can plan accordingly.

If you are thinking of coming, let me know what days you might be here. Even if it is just part of the day. This includes locals. Even if you just want to hang out Saturday afternoon- please, please let me know.

this should be totally awesome. :)

Okay, I have lived here more than 30 years and not ONCE did I know this place existed.

(Guess where I'm sneaking out to tomorrow?) ;)

dahkota -- you spelled it right; and refreshed my memory. TY

Clara -- the one in Wheaton is Brookside Gardens. Cool place to shoot, great butterflies, but not the most photographer friendly -- restrictions on hours and tripod use, etc. Definitely call ahead and get the scoop if going in a sizable group.

As long as you don't tell my boss where I am.

It has been really rainy but makes picture taking easier, unless you're caught in it. Gotten me out of baseball practice though. 4-6 days a week is just entirely too much. Even if all I'm doing is watching. Then I have to come home and watch EVERY O's game.

Enough whining. Yes, you will get some pictures if I'm a lucky duck. And its gonna be 72 and partly cloudy tomorrow. Yeehaa!

Which airport is the best to arrive at (as far as getting a taxi to where ever we are going to book the hotel), or does it really matter?

Dulles, Regan or Baltimore?

Thanks.

DCA seems to be the least expensive... and its on the Metro line

Dulles would be last choice of airports. It's 35 miles NW of the city with no easy transportation in to town. DCA is closer to downtown Wash, very close indeed, and on the Metro subway line. BWI is halfway between Wash and Baltimore, it has good access to public trans but you have to change from a MARC or Amtrak train that you get at the airport to the Metro at Union Station. Really depends on where you will be staying. Personally I'd say use BWI and try to find a hotel/motel in the Maryland suburbs as downtown Washington hotels are very expensive (among top 5 US cities) and are likely to be fairly well booked that time of the year with tourists and conventions. Ideal would be to find one that had shuttle service to both BWI airport and to the Metro.

Another alternative- the rail line from BWI also intersects the Metro system at the New Carrollton station (the eastern end of the Orange line). That area is sort of a mini-hub of trans with Amtrak, Metro and the Beltway all very close. A decent hotel/motel with a New Carrollton or Lanham address ought to have shuttle service to the adjacent rail and subway stations.

Clara (blemt) is looking to book a block of rooms for the DPCers who are staying in hotel/motels.

DCA seems to be cheapest to fly into.

Put my hubby and me down for a yes! We will be driving in and staying in a hotel someplace. We will be there for the full weekend. I'm betting on a closing (I'm a Realtor) that is scheduled for early July, so if that doesn't go through (it happens) plans may change.

I'm so excited! :)

DCA or BWI are the prefered airports. Dulles is out there in the middle of nowhere. :)
