Photo is over exposed by about 1/2 to 2/3 stops. it's a common thing at sunset/sunrise using the default camera matrix mode. The sunlight is a bit too bright because the camera is trying to compensate for the foreground stuff which is much darker. If this was reshot again with a graduated neutral density filter, then it'll be much better. (i am guessing hte sunlight versus the foreground is about 2 F stops difference) But negative space? Not much of that. For the same composition, use a wider angle, lower top to the end of the "light", capture MORE of the sandy beach and use that as the negative space (also move the boat toward the end of the edge of the page. Seems like a nice place though.

Well, not sure I should dare follow that with this critique request but, here goes nothin'....

Gordon that was a great shot, I especially liked the lighting on the boat up by the steering wheel. It's a 10 and I liked the shadows along with the remaining light. Now for negative space maybe not you have the clouds, water, boat, beach, and sky making the image. We only have a few more days of this negativity. It is a wonder, why we all have been negative on the forums this week. It probably had to do with the topic. |

Paganini: Are you referring to my photo or to my comment? :-) I didn't do the one with the boat... or are you discussing 2 photos in this reply? Thanks, Karen

This is where I am lost. So many people have different ideas of what the challenge is for that they are voting for their interpretation only.
Those photos posted abover are great and I would have rated then all above a 5 (at least). The challenge was to create the wow of the image with the negative space. All of the above people, as well as myself did that, and are all being judged so poorly.
How is the negative space supposed to be the wow, and be plain and extremely boring? |

Ok ZADORE, Ya know you are right. What was I thinking? I still like it better then the first photo. The cloud could be part of the positive also. Is it aloud to have more then one positive as long as they don't take your eye away from each other? That is a tough one! Can you answer that? Anyone. Sonja

You contradicted yourself here. If the negative (sky) brought your eye to the positive (house), how come you got stuck on the cloud, which is in the negative??
To me, there is no negative in the picture. There is too much contrast between the sky and the cloud to call it a 'negative'. I'd give it a 1.[/i]

Both of these photos seem to have too many competing elements. I do not think that negative space means to have your subject be distant and off center, it means having a simple complimentary background.
I like both pictures, though. I would crop out the sand on the first, and maybe make the second black and white. |

Oh Beth, I love it! Stop kicking yourself please. Just the fact that this is your work, and it is so fine, is really what's important. There will be more challenges. I know it must sound trite, but it is true. Share your picture with people and enjoy it, and don't worry about the score of the one you submitted. Put this one on Photosig. It's a very wonderful image...Good work!

This is one that I was considering entering this week. I'm getting a much better idea of what is and is not a good use of negative space thanks to this week's crop of submissions, but I'm wondering if this would have fit the bill?

Alan, This is very good. The coloring is interesting and the lines are awesome. Great job!
HERE are some of my outtakes from the Neg.
