Took these last weekend. Thought I'd share. Comments/Critique welcome.
With Blur? or Without Blur?
Or neither?
Thanks!

The landscape orientation is preferable to the portrait orientation with all the negative space... If there were nice clouds in the sky it might be a different story.

Thanks, Steve. It's no wonder I never agree with the winning challenge pics...lol...I must have a taste all my own. I actually prefer the verticle crop. :-) I appreciate your honesty though. It's good to know how others react. So thank you!

I like the landscape version of the bridge shot, but there is something that draws me to the portrait version, can't quite put my finger on it. I think it's a combination of the somewhat brighter reflections, the leading lines in the water, and the negative space. It just works for me. I might like a little less negative space, but you might achieve that by going with a shorter aspect ratio, maybe 1.25:1 instead of 1.5:1.

I'm with you. I like the portrait orientation better. The landscape one is *normal*, everyone and anyone can take that kind of picture. |

Thanks, Fritz!
Nathan, thank you. That's exactly why I like it. It's not the usual shot. I have a waterfall image that is very different from the norm and that doesn't usually get high marks, either...but I love it. :-)
Thanks again, everyone!

Jen... Not to say my 'opinion' is correct. You only have to look through my DPC entry list to see I make a lot of bad choices, so what do I know. LOL.
Trust your own judgement! :)

LOL! Don't be silly. The first thing I notice is your three ribbons. :-P Besides, just because someone's opinion differs doesn't mean they are wrong, necessarily. :-)
Thanks again for your replies.

Well I like the blur! The blur of the flowers is super. But the photo doesn't work as a whole for me. The problem I see is that a) there's too little of the dogwood (or whatever) flowers in the shot compared to the tree trunk and scene, and the rest of the scene is neither blurry or sharp. The second, non blurry shot has a nice contrast between the sharp flowers and the very OOF tree. The motion blurred shot has a sharper, but not in focus, tree, so there's less contrast.
I think if there were more of the motion blurred flowers, and/or more gaussian style blur on the trunks and scene, or even if those were completely sharp, it would work better.
So picking one of the two, I would pick number 2. But number 1 has so much potential! |
