I know this camera is rated for 5FPS and 25 continuous frames, but I have tested mine out and I get a steady 32 frames continuous.

Has anyone else noticed this? Or know why.

It could be related to the quality you're shooting at since the number you can shoot continuous depends on the size of the buffer and possibly the speed of the card you are using.

Is it really 5FPS though? When I played with it at best buy it seemed more like 2.5 or 3.

The 300d is supposed to be 2.5 and the 20d is definitely much faster...

I got to play with one this weekend...I thought it'd be much heavier, I really want one!

As long as the shuter speed is high enough I get 5FPS. If I shout at 500th of a second I get 5FPS easy

the 20D with a battery is as heavy as my 300d with the grip on and 2 batteries if not heavier

I am, I am. I usually impulse buy when I want something new, but I'm letting this one settle to make sure it's something I want to invest in (it really is an investment). Seems like the 20D is the best bang for my buck right now... I really want something very very quick and while 6mp would be fine, I can't complain about getting 8.

I am loving my 20D, I am so glad I did not buy the XT.

The 20D is very comfortable in my hands. I've been using an Olympus E-20N with battery pack so it has a similar feel. Not quite hardy feeling as my Olympus but very close.

the price in Toronto Canada just drop for the 20D. went down 200$ so I bought one last week.

Excellent camera.

The 20D will do 5 fps, and under the right conditions, it will go well beyond the stated 25 frames limit. One of the programs that comes with it is EOS Viewer Utility. When you view your images in EVU it shows in the exif data the time the shot was taken down to the second. I have on many occasions shot bursts that show 5 shots with the same second recorded, sometimes for 2-3 seconds in a row. I suspect that your test at BestBuy test may have been at a relatively slow shutter speed (indoor lighting).

Burst shooting is one area where the 20D's loud shutter sound is sometimes useful. I've been shooting on the sidelines of games and when I fire off a sequence of 15-20 shots even the guys with the big 8fps Nikons will look to see where that sound is coming from. The D2H is faster, but it can't go as long or make as much noise as a 20D, lol.

When Canon says 5fps for 25 shots it means you can get 25 continuous shots at 5fps then you can keep shooting but the frame rate decreases, so even if you are getting 32 frames only the first 25 were shot at 5fps, the remainder will most likely be somewhere around 2.5-3fps

I've gotten around 28 frames at JPG Fine/Large @ continuous 5fps with my 4gb microdrive which isn't the fastest card (by a long shot).

I've shot over a 100 @ 5fps in small/coarse settings (stopped after reaching 100, don't wanna fry my shutter lol)

This make great sense. Thank Dr nick.

While you are shooting those 25 shots, the buffer is being emptied to your card and that allows you to squeeze in a few extra shots at a sustained 5 fps, depending on the speed of your card.

That was my thought. If i take 25 in a row my buffer has already dump 4 or 5 on the card so I get a couple more at the end.

Thats what I think but I'm not for sure. I will have to test it out.

Plus it will depend on image size - point the camera at a white wall with no detail and the burst will be longer (less detail, smaller image size).

Corwyn, where did you buy your 20d in TO?
04/22/2005 11:49:00 AM · #19
The faster fps is why I now use the Canon 20D over the slower Nikon D70. The Nikon D70 is about 2.5-3.0 fps. Its now my backup unit. It takes better quality images than the 20D, but I need speed most of the time, and Photoshop CS makes up the difference.
Reasons for different testing fps results could be;
1. Fully charged battery.
2. Light source
3. Memory card speed to write ratio
4. Sometimes the lens that is mounted.
5. Last but not least your own "wish" factor.

I got it from Downtown Camera. I got the kit for 1975 and they threw in a 512 extreme card. I also got 20$ the remote for it.

You really think the 20D take worse pics then the D70? Ever review I've read has it the other way around

Factors such as file size and shutter speed also figure into the actual burst rate you'll get. Images with little detail (a small bird against a clear blue sky perhaps) will be smaller file sizes than ones with lots of stuff in them, and will obviously write to your card faster; and that lets the buffer clear faster. And if you are shooting in low light with a shutter speed of say 1/5 of a second, you are not going to get 5 fps. The nice thing about the 20D is that it can walk and chew gum at the same time, or rather write files from buffer to card while it is focusing, capturing, and processing new images into the buffer.

Did a guy named Dominic sell it to you?

The card he gave me says paul but he was a younger guy. he helped me on the phone and I asked if he got comission and he said yes. So I made sure I gave him my sale. (he did help me on the phone so it's only fair)

Cool, just wondering...one of the strangers I went to Boston with for the VII seminar works at Downtown Camera and his name is Dominic...really cool guy.
