Even when you finally can focus on them, they have grunge on them. Anyone have an idea on what is a fair price to have them cleaned?

wow ... ehmmm ... well ...
It's likely that a lot of what you see is reflection. The jewelry should be completely surrounded by white (top, bottom, sides) - this will help a lot. The more light you can dump into those small spaces, the better (no shadows looking like "grunge"

I borrowed some jewelry from my mom for the shoot. The stuff was a little dirty and she had some kind of jewelry cleaner that she dipped it in. Now, they weren't real diomands, and I'm not sure what the stuff was, but you can probably get it at any department store. They looked a lot nicer after the cleaning. Still hard to photograph, though |

you can use toothpaste and toothbrush to polish diamonds ::))) old trick i learned from a rich cheap old lady!!!!

Any good jewelry store would clean them for free. |
