I am looking for a free/cheep photo organizer (I did try searching the forums but got routed to google and then couldn't find what I was looking for in the first 10 or so) Anyone use googles new Picasa 2? It is free but I am a little worried that it organizes based on dates. Anyone use it? Love it? Hate it?

I installed and tried it. Didn't like it taking control, so I uninstalled it. I use iView Media Pro (Not cheap).

Why would you need a photo organizer? I don't understand. I just store mine in folders and subfolders. Example: I have a image of a great egret. If it is the first picture of theis species I give it a number of 0001. This file goes in a folder for Egret Great, which goes in a folder for birds which I title BI. So the full name of the file is [BI Egret Great 0001] it is in subfolder [BI Egret Great] which is in folder [BI] which is on my hardrive.

With this system I can find any file instanly with no guess work. Samples of main folder titles would be PL for plants, PE for people, MM for mammal, IN for invertabrate, AM for ampibian and RE for reptile.

I use picasa2 and love it. It does have some quirks, but the features more than make up for it.

Once installed, don't let picasa search your drive for images, I preferred to manually import, which let me categorise as I went. perhaps I'm just a control freak though :)

As far as editing images goes, it doesn't come close to photoshop. My primary use for it is organising. The organisation features appear rudimentary at first, but the longer I use the program the more impressed I am. The keyword search works with assigned keywords as well as in the image names, organising is at two levels (collections and folders). At first I thought that this would not be enough, but the search filters more than make up for only having two levels of folder heirarchy. it will also import from your camera straight into a folder or collection, but it currently doesn't see pictures I shoot on RAW. Granted I've only done this once to see if it would work, I haven't tried to make it work.

There's loads of gimmicky features that may not appeal to a professional photographer (Picture Collage, Gift CD, Blogger support), but it's free and it works, and if you don't like the extra bits, just don't use em :)

The Canon picture window app that came with the camera downloads stuff into dateable folders, to which I add location names after the date.

ZoomBrowser lets you add tags, which I do for keepers from time to time, so that I can find stuff by subjects.

I also keep a year-dated folder of finished images for that year - they get similarly catalogued.

Then all of that gets burned to 2 DVDs when necessary, and one goes to Yorkshire, and one stays here in London.
