I just bought a 20d (great machine) I had a 300d. Here's the big question;

When I open a JPEG image taken with the 300d in Photoshop then go; IMAGE/IMAGE SIZE... the actual dimentions of the image are 3072 x 2048 and the dpi is 180

NOW when I do the same with the 20d the image dimensions are 3504 x 2336 BUT the dpi is 72.

If I was to print out both images at 100 surely the one with the higher dpi would be sharper....????

NOW I have worked in the printing game for years, and as far as I know even though the 20d has slightly more pixels the resolution is lower.... If I was to create an A4 page for print in Photoshop I set the dpi to 300 infact 180 would print just fine too, but 72 dpi id only for on screen use and when printed would look poor.

Please help!!!!!

DPI is for printing ONLY and has NO meaning in PS unless you are printing.
the overal image size is all that matter - the 20D is bigger than the 300D's image.
see //www.scantips.com for a thorough explanation of this stuff.

you can change DPI in PS in the CROP dialog (as well as other places).
I use a lab for printing, so whether PS says 2 dpi or 2000 i don't care - as long as the image is 200 dpi you'll be fine. (need a 4x6? 800x1200 image, or bigger. need an 8x10? 1600x2000, or bigger).

for best quality you may want to keep the DPI to 300, but 200 works and the math is easier.

Forget about dpi with regard to the detail that is contained in an image. The ONLY thing that dpi specifies is how to scale the image for paper output.
The fact that Canon chose 72 dpi for the default on the 20D (or chose 180 for some older cams) is irrelevant.
For the 300D, you have 3072 px in the long direction, so when printing at 300dpi, you can print a little over 10 inches wide (3072/300 = 10.24 inches). With the 20D, you will get a printed width of 11.68 inches at 300 dpi (3504/300 = 11.68).
