Wow, wow, and wow! What an event! I am soooo there next year! Those costumes are insane... truly! Great job on the lighting. What did you use? External flash I assume, but was it on a lower setting than average? Tell us the details? The photos look perfect in lighting and color! I'd love to hear what settings you used!

I mainly used the N and a 420EX with Stofen diffuser with Tamron 17-35. Program mode with ISO 400. That's it. You can also see the EXIF data on the "details" link just under the image.
RSP helps with noise reduction and increasing contrast via the curves tool as well.

Ooh,
looks like this post is too quiet.
Well went to the Long Beach shorline on Friday and then the Reagan Library Saturday.
Should be at the Santa Monica Beach for some desolate beach type shots on Tuesday.

In case you haven't seen my other post (LA DPCers), I am buying new lenses as soon as I get my bonus! I should be the proud owner of a Canon 70-200 IS USM and a Tamaron (something) soon!!!!

Hope you all are well :)

Hi LA DPCr's!

I'm looking for good photography classes in the LA area. I've already done some research about it, but I thought I would ask in this thread to benefit from the experience of other people. So here go a few questions:

- Have taken a photography class in the LA area?
- What kind of class was it (studio lighting, portrait, outdoor...)
- Where did you take the class?
- What did you think of it? Would you recommend it?
- How much did it cost?

Any and all replies on this subject are extremely welcome.

I'm sorry, I've never attended any classes but I know that Pasadena City College has a nightschool type of course for Photography. Cal State Univ, Long Beach I think actually has a major in photography as well. Perhaps these might be places to investigate at first.

I haven't been able to take photography classes because of nursing school. But these were recommended to me:

Tri-Community Photography
and
Julia Dean

If you take any class, I would be interested to know what you think.

//www.brooks.edu/ is in Santa Barbara (which is too far for a day trip), but I hear it's a great college!

I would recommend taking some classes at your local community college and using the vast knowledge found here at DPC in order to become the best photographer you can be. I took a class at //www.artcenter.edu in Pasadena at Art Center @ Night. It was expensive for paying students ($700+). I used to work there, so it was free for me at the time. Anyhow, it was a very good class, but too quick (once a week for 6 weeks). I would recommend a daily or 3 days a week college course. I think you'd learn more!

Let us know what you decide :)

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to check these out.

If I end up taking a class I'll come back to let you all know what my impressions.

Thanks Peredur! I hope you enjoy the holidays! I will (now that I have a Canon 70-200 IS USM)! Haha.

See you all back here in January!!! We'll have to plan a meet-up. Start thinking of locations and dates! I'll start a thread...

Went to Olvera Street with Raul and Gary to test out Raul's new Nikon D200. We checked out the Union Staion, an Art Deco train station, then walked down Broadway, which was a teather district of LA many decades ago. Now it's filled with various stores serving the Hispanic district, bustling and full of life after the white collar workers leave the city in their cars. We then headed back to Olvera Street, the place where LA was founded in 1796, I believe, and shot visiting Folkorico dancers from Mexico.
fun was had by all.
Here are my shots.

Went to DWP Lightfestival at Griffith Park yesterday.
It was a bit tougher to shoot the light displays than I thought.
The light display is obviously very 2D and I tried to avoid flat compositions by getting a view from the side to include the road and the cars. I used AV mode at f16 but ended up going for M moded with 20sec and f16. This oversaturated the lights a little bit. Oh well.

Anyway, I've got them uploaded.

With this wierd later-than-usual winter we've had, it's unpredictable, but the Poppy Reserve is saying the poppies will be best around late April-May. Here's a link to their site: Poppy Reserve

If you're going up the weekend of the 22nd, check this out too: Poppy Festival It's nothing spectactular, just a big carnival with arts and craft booths, lots of other stuff, and a stage with live music, but fun if you like that kind of stuff. They used to have busses that take you out to the Poppy Reserve, but no mention on their site about it this year.

Took a while to find this thread...

How about late February for an outing? If there's interest, we can start a new thread for that outing.
