This was cool! Had me distracted away from my update button and hadn't even noticed my Free Study was up to 7.0131 now.

What we need here is a new forum section called "Ask Brad".

Jen, that's a picture of a page of the bible, and that part's plenty sharp. The foreground object was not intended to be sharp. Note that the challenmge topic was "transparency", and that the foreground object has thrown a star/cross shadow on the page that i sbeing illuminated through it. If that object were sharp, the picture probably would be too busy...

Jen,
When you upload a picture into your portfolio, hold your mouse over the picture you want to post. Then, if you are using Internet Explorer, you should see the following on the bottom left of your window:
//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=169063
Your picture number is after the IMAGE_ID=.
Put that number into your post.
Does that work for you?

Your camera does not offer a macro focus mode, and you have made this shot from inside the effective focusing range of the camera. So the quick answer is no, you can't improve the sharpness with the equipment you are using. Something else I noticed about the Photosmart; it has no "optical" zoom, just a digital zoom. This means that when you zoom, you are losing image quality in exactly the same way you would if you shot with no zoom and cropped out the center of the image and blew it up.

Nope - no help for that shot (well actually there is, and I'l be back in a few with my final verdict)
Not being familiar with your camera, hard to know what went wrong.
Do you have a Macro setting? If not, you have no choice but to back up, as it appears you are too close to the subject. More light will help too, as that (should) stop down the aperature if in auto mode and that will help get more in focus.
Just looked it up - No Macro and a fixed aperature of F4.5 - close-up work isn't this camera's forté. |

Jen,
I also noticed that you are renaming all of your images in your portfolio to match the DPC ID. This isn't necessary unless you want to do it just to make it easier for you to identify. You just need to use that number in your posts.

Back with my (drum roll) verdict:
Shot is toast.
Need to look in your owner's manual to find out the minimum subject-to-camera distance and not go less than that. |

Had to kick back a few and look at the big picture here.
I'm honored and very flattered by the comments and kudos being tossed my way, and am kinda' sitting here feeling a bit odd about it all.
I am a novice in many ways with digital imaging and I have seen other very talented members on this site offer their help and was in awe with their skills. I'm sure they have forgotten more about Photoshop than I will ever know.
I had no idea who opened the gates, but surely don't deserve to be singled out like this. I'm just a goofball that enjoys life, and is obssessed with perfecting whatever I tackle in life.
I have read so many negative comments and posts about challenges and the lack of comments. In the Abandoned challenge I decided I wanted to see if I could offer my basic level input from a average user's viewpoint to see if it could make a small difference like Sonya mentioned in a PAY it FORWARD way. No hidden reasons, no ulterior motives, just returning back to where it all started from for me.
If we all can freely share and help each other, we all win.
When you see another member helping someone out, let them know it's appreciated - it's what makes the warm fuzzies in life, and in turn will make this site a friendly and welcome second home.
Time for a group hug:

Where the heck were you when they were voting for a Pope?? ;-)
Hey Brad - you've mentioned coincidences several times and I just found this one - I was in San Diego July of last year (and again in October). I saw your Cityscpe from June of last year and dug up one of the shots I took during my trip in July:

I see you found the tool kit, kpriest. Foreground towers are the chisels, middleground behinf the leftmost chisel is the phillips head screwdriver, and down to the far left you can make out the hex wrenches. That's what we called 'em. San Diego is my family home for 4 generations, and it's where my Architectyral Photography business was based out of.

Well let's see, the horizon isn't level, sky is too blue, buildings are too straight...
Nah - seriously, it's a nice shot. Balance of sky & water feels good, and you had a great vantage point to shoot from too.
That Nikon does a pretty darned good job of capturing the detail.
Did you get a chance to see it at night while here?

Sweet! I did not get downtown that night. We stayed at the Courtyard by Old Town the night before we went on this cruise.
The Nikon's ok, but I am likin' my Rebel! Just need LOTS more practice!
Here's another one from that trip going under the Coronado bridge...
