Lives high in a tree in Serbia. About 30cm tall.

It reminds me of a female European cuckoo. The males, supposedly, have a barred chest. ?

google image search suggests you're thinking of //homepage2.nifty.com/kawazu/kakkou20030524a.jpg which is nothing alike sadly

Similar shape, but not a Cuckoo. The marking at the base of the beak and, distinctly, the blue markings on the wing, are NOT traits of the Cuckoo. You are cottect, though, that the male has a barred chest.

That's because in the example photo he/she's in a "threat" pose and the feathers are on display, especially the top of the head. I saw another pic that looked more like yours but it was real small and not very good. I liked that shot so I linked it. Good pic you caught, btw :-)
