...And an embarrassing story...
Go to your doctor's regularly! At the first onsight of a problem, see them immediately. Call off work, and just go.
Three weeks ago, I began having this horrible pain in my anus (butthole) -- seriously, I'm not talking about like a little twitch or anything like that, I'm talking about can barely walk, hurts to sit type of thing. Immediately, I'm thinking hemheroids or some sort of cancer or worse. So of course I send someone else to the store to buy me some Preparation H because I'm too embarrassed to buy it myself.
Over the next three weeks, I was just about constantly in pain. Constantly searching the internet for possible medical problems I might have, always imagining the worst. At times, I was un-social, didn't want to talk to friends, avoided family, and was even down-right suicidal for a little while.. Finally, the other day, I say I'm sick of it (after going in the morning and experiencing more pain), so I call off work and head to the doctor's.
Of course, my doctor wasn't available, so I had to make an appointment with a female doctor (which was quite embarrassing, but I was really fed up with it). Anyway, she performed all the tests that she possibly could (use your mind, I'm not going to explain it -- oh which by the way isn't as bad as everyone thinks -- it's quite painless) and comes up with allergies. I'm thinking ALLERGIES!?!? You have got to be kidding me!?
Sure enough, my girlfriend got some new laundry detergent about a month ago and apparently that's what my problem was. So ... here I sit...pain-free, worry-free. If there's one piece of advice I can give, go to the doctor's before you start thinking about doing something so extreme that it can cost you the rest of your life.
I know it's an embarrassing situation, but I figured I would share it because possibly it can help someone in the future.

Here's one from my recent experience.. get treatment before it starts hurting.
A dentist told me two years ago that I had some decay in my wisdom tooth and should have it pulled out.. I was skeptical, since I didnt feel anything.. so I didnt do anything. A year later, another dentist told me the same thing, but offered a filling instead of pulling out. I accepted and got a filling. Still didnt feel anything. A month back I started feeling occasional pain, and went to a new dentist two weeks back. This one confirmed the decay, and told me I should've gotten it removed instead of filling.
Last week I got severe pain in the jaw that lasted 60hours (including night), until I could get a dentist appointment. She told me that it was due to the wisdom tooth cavity (somehow upper right wisdom teeth and lower right jaw share the same nerve). The continous pain went away after pressing on the wisdom tooth.
Finally, today morning I had it removed. It was painless. If only I'd listened two years ago!

Conclusive proof that women really are a pain in the ass : )
And on that note I'm going to bed. I'll read all the witty comebacks from the lovely ladies of DPC in the morning :D

There's really only one comeback. Do your own laundry. |

Hehehe... Not only am I not embaressed to buy it, I pose with it!
On a serious note, I understand you. There's nothing worst than a pain in the butt. It will seriously affect your mood and you're right, don't be afraid to go to the doctor (male or female). Take care of yourselves... and your butts.

And to all you "It's nothing, I'm Superman - it'll go away" guys out there, I'm living proof that it pays to be in tune with yourself and ask for help when things aren't right - no shame in it.
In Nov. 2000, (Age 43 then) I was coming up to the shop to work and kinda' felt "funny" that morning. Achy is a better way to describe it. I had been coughing the night before and just assumed I pinched a nerve or something, as the ache would come & go in my shoulder/upper back. Hot shower, no change. On the way to work, the ache would be there, in a rela dull way, then just quit! Figure the nervous system (electrical) is about al that can react that fast and kept with th epinched nerve theory.
As I was about to make the last turn to the shop (1/2 mile away), the ache came back, but I started sweating and my hands felt cold.
This did NOT feel right. I turn left instead, went the 3/4 mile to the Hospital, filled out on my check in form: "Cold extremities, chest/shoulder pain & sweating" (I was already fearing what many of you are putting 2 & 2 together reading this) and figured it would get some attention.
You guessed it - I was having a heart attack. Blood samples showed the enzymes in the blood stream that are unique to someone that is having or recently had one. Nitro, drips, and Cardiac ICU for the weekend, followed by 2 stents in the Circumflex Artery (goes around left side and to the back side). Wasn't clogged-up, just wouldn't stay open at a kink/bend.
I was lucky, because I work alone and may have never made to getting the doors open, could have keeled over in the shop and nobody would have known for many hours.
Pay attention to your body and listen when it tells you things aren't right. I'm living proof that it does pay off.
Sorry for the ramble, but it may be the most important thing I ever have and will say on this network. |

Wow, good story BradP. This even has, however, forced me to read so many things on good healthy eating habits and the dangers involved to the body if you eat fast food and bad things. I'm currently eating a 4 servings of fruits/vegetables a day and paying much closer attention to my diet...as I'm sure BradP is too. I'm a hard-learner...Well, it's never too late to start.
