Why does the 50 2.5 Macro cost four times more than the 50 F1.8?

The macro can focus closer, but does that require anything special? More or higher qaulity glass? 2.5 is a whole stop slower than 1.8, so I doubt it's the amount of glass in it.

Simple question, I just don't see where the price difference comes from.

I own the 50mm 2.5 macro. I'd guess the reason for the price difference is the additional optics necessary to achieve close focus.

Difference is build quality and focussing distance.

Well the 50mm Macro is better built, can focus closer AND it has less distortion than any of the other 50mm's canon makes. It's arguably the best in terms of distortion. Of course, it is a bunch slower than any of the others.

Why does it cost 4 times more - because people who want macro lenses are willing to pay that amount.

I doubt it costs canon 4 times more to produce.

perhaps you should compair it to the 50mm 1.4 instead if you're hung up on price compairing.

Ahh yes, but I already know why it's worth more than the F1.8. Good construction, sharpness wide open, and most importantly F1.4!

well ok... the macro has more pieces of glass(about 50% more) in it, it's almost twice as big, and it is twice as heavy, it can go to F32 instead of only F22 which probably mean is it has more shutter blades, it has less distortion, and better build quality. They really are not that similar of lenses, and it's worth the price difference.

edit: oh did i mention it's also sharper than the 1.8?
