With the big shift to dSLR cameras on this site and the abundance of different lenses I feel that it should be required to give more information about the entries.

I would like to see:
What lens was used. Make, focal length, Etc.
At what focal length the shot was shot at if a zoom.
Approximate distance between subject and photographer.
What filter was used.

The Manufacturer of the lens should be a search category, so a person could search for images taken with a certain lens to see the results of others. This would be a great tool when shopping.

I also feel the information field needs to be filled out. It is so disappointing to see a real nice picture and want to know more about it, and the photographer wasn't proud enough to put anything down. Maybe there needs to be an example of what the Admin. would like the photographer to put in this field. I don't know, but it is empty too much of the time.

Come on, share some of that information and knowledge with us people that still regard this site as a source to improve our skills and our whole photography experience.

I'm with you about the frustration of shots that don't list the info -- aperture, ISO & shutter speed are the minimum -- but I credit it to laziness instead of a lack of pride in the shot. I don't think that's too much to ask for a photo someone puts into the forums seeking comments and critique, and it could easily be made mandatory for entries.

As for lenses, I have started putting the lens and focal length in my comments. It would be nice to have a drop down menu for lenses like the one for cameras but I know that would mean a lot of work to create and maintain a database. But a blank space to fill in would encourage people to put in the info.

Agreed about what lens was used. More and more images are taken with dSLRs and that is an important piece of information.

Fortunately the focal length is included in EXIF data so can always be easily retrieved.

Distance to subject is more obscure and unneeded IMO.

Filters are also more obscure and probably unnecessary. Most images submitted have only a skylight filter and that is just for protection of the lense anyway. Outdoor photographers tend to use polarizer filters but that is the only group I can think of that might use filters on a regular basis.
