I was playing with what I thought was my aperture settings on the Sony Mavica FD100. I can set the focus to Macro, .5, 1, 3, 5, 7, and infinity. I took two pictures today, and used a program to look at my f-stops. From infinity to Macro, they were virtually the same - f3.8. Anyone have any ideas?

The lens can focus at any distance at the same aperature. What the aperature will affect is, how much in front of, and behind the object appears in focus. the numbers you were playing with the was focus distance. If you want to change your DOF, switch to manual exposure, and adjust the aperature. A numerically high aperature will have greater DOF (say F11) than a numerically low aperature (say F2.0).
Sidetrack: There is an interesting term that applies to focus and lens optics, know as circles of confusion. So, DOF is defined as the distance in front of the focal point, and behind it where the cirlces of confusion are small enough to give the illusion of being in focus. |

Thanks Zeissman! If I am understanding correctly, those numbers that I played with say that everything is in focus "upto" .5m, 1m, and so on. Right?[/b] On another note, you say to play with the exposure. I have something called EV that I can set at -2, -1, 0, +1 and +2. Is that what you are talking about? I wish someone would come up with a Mavica to Photography dictionary!

Exposure value is a system for converting an aperture and shutter speed setting to a single value. The idea is that multiple combinatins of aperture/shutter will expose the same amount of light for the same scene. Your camera has a built-in meter that determines the proper exposure value to use, then you can adjust it with the +/- EV control to intentionally over- or under-expose the scene.
Somewhere else in your camera will you have a control to make the camera favor a higher or lower aperture or slower or faster shutter speed. This is how those modes like "portrait," "landscape" or "action" work.

No, it is saying that it is focusing the camera at 0.5m, 1m, 2m. How much is in focus in front of, or beyond that, is determined by the focal lenght and the aperature.
You should have a manual mode where you can adjust your aperature. If you adjust your aperature and you shutter speed together, you will keep you exposure constant. Adjusting the EV will not really do the trick, it can adjust the light sensitivity of the sensor, or the shutter speed, or the aperature, and give you over/underexposed pictures. Your manual should explain somoe of this.
