San Jose Grand Prix is the inaugural Champ Car event roaring through the streets of San Jose. Any bay area folks thinking of attending?

Finally!
I remember how excited I was after I moved up here when I first heard of the San Francisco Grand Prix. Everyone was talking about it and where they were going to watch it from, etc. I got sooooo excited. You should have seen the look on my face when I realized it was for bicycles and not cars. Disappointment turned to anger as the race drew closer. At work you could hear me muttering... they're shutting the streets down for.... bicycles?!? |

Whoohoo! My wife's family live in San Jose. But wait... we live on the wrong coast.... bummer. Hmmm... field trip?
About 15 years ago, I worked for an advertising/marketing firm that was trying to put together a Washington DC Grand Prix event. We quickly discovered that you basically can't do it in DC -- at least anywhere recognizeable as DC -- because (at the time) regulations prohibit blocking free public access to federal property. That eliminated every single landmark and every bit of Park Service property -- and all the traffic circles with statues are technically DC parks.
I can only imagine what it would be like post-9/11... at least 15 years ago the gub'mint ENTERTAINED the idea briefly. These days, virtually EVERY public building has dramatically restricted public acccess....

Hmmmm. The building where I work is 1 block up the street from the starting line. I think I will have to start scoping out a good place to watch and shoot the race from. ;-)
