I know most of you don't have access to the print edition of The Washington Post, but if you do please check out the photo in the center of today's Sports section. For the rest of you, it is the largest newspaper photo I've ever seen. It measures approximately 23 by 14 inches, it's in color and covers most of 2 pages. The photog is a Post staffer named Preston Keres. The shot is one many of you would recognize- a very wide angle from the top row in a packed stadium taken as the first pitch was thrown. It's well executed but not perfect, there is blow out along the top edge where the setting sun still hits the stadium's light standards, and the normal distortion that comes with ultra wide angle. The occasion was the return on Major League Baseball to DC. The papers, both in Wash and here in Balt, have been full of coverage and pics for a week or more. This picture's size alone gives it tremendous dramatic impact even without the sentimental meaning of the moment it shows. Kudos to Preston Keres and the Post.
The Nationals won the game and are in first place in the NL East.

I looked at washingtonpost.com. Pretty cool panorama! RFK looks strange with baseball in it instead of the 'skins.
George Bush can't throw. :)
Lotta great pics there of the game.

So sad that the Expos are gone though. Go Nationals!
Maybe I can find a good little league game to watch. Sigh .... Gonna miss that game.

Boo! As a former Oregonian, I think I'm required to hate DC for getting the Expos... :-( |

DC waited 34 years and was left at the altar several times. How long has Oregon been trying to get a Major League Baseball team?
If you feel bad that Oregon didn't get a team you should direct your hatred toward Bud Selig and the owners, not against DC. People in DC just wanted a team, same as Oregonians. They didn't do anything to you. And they would be happy to welcome you if you want to have a team to root for.
