I'm trying to get a nice soft focus effect on a wedding photo! I'm not really having much success! The photo looks ok at a smaller size (5" x 7") but I'm trying to crop and enlarge to 10" x 10". I'm just finding that the photo starts to look a little washed out and it is just throwing the focus too much, making the faces look a little blurry! Can anyone tell me some settings they have found useful! I have PSP 9 and Photoshop 7! Please help!

Free PS plugs (work in Digital Image Pro as well)

Virtual Photographer or Xero (set number 4 has soft mood and soft vignette which are cool)

Ed: As I was...Xero Plug-in set 2 has soft mood...

I use the dreamy photo plugin that come with the Auto FX Dreamsuite 2 .

It works awesome.

I suppose I'll ask the obvious: have you tried Gordon's workshop in the tutorials area? I find that to be a nice start.

If you have two layers, your original, sharp layer, can be worked on: I sometimes add contrast or push the middle tones to the darker, or even boost the saturation a bit. The blurry layer's opacity can be adjusted, too. I haven't had much problem with this method.

In PS

Duplicate the layer, add a 5px gaussian blur, blend mode to darken and opacity around 40%. Duplicate the layer and set this one to the lighten blend mode with opacity around 59%. Use the eraser on areas you want to retain sharpness, ie the eyes.

If it's a wedding picture then the above may be too subtle for your tastes.
