I wanted to see how well it did at f/1.8...Does it look OK?

Very cool shot. Says it all, right there.

is that a rhetorical question :)?

Very good exposition of the shallow dof!

:-)

Said it before, I'll say it again...

The 50 F/1.8 II is the best bang for buck in any lens..

Nice shot to illustrate the shallow DOF..

You'll find that it's simply stunning at F/2.5-2.8 for portraits and has better colour/contrast than many lenses worth silly money.

Use a single focus point on one eye, to get your composition, and try to avoid really big 'focus then compose' movements if you're using AF.. With the shallow DOF moving more than a few degrees after focusing with mean the eyes are soft, and the tip of the nose is in perfect focus. :-).

Have fun...

It's the best piece of plastic around...
Quality of the pics are worth twice maybe three times as much as the lens. The build quality is right on the money.

Scott's test is really great !

Does it really matter this lens is not USM ? What difference does it really make ?

For now, I only have one lens with my 20D ( Canon EF-S 17-85mm IS USM ) and I would like to get another one with wider aperture.

It's a little slower focus the USM and a little "Maybe" a lot louder

I love this lense. It stays on my camera virtually all the time. The only time I do take it off is when I need to go a little wider or lack space between me and my subject.
